    Izzy,

Have not fished for craps there at night, only walleye and that was long time ago. I will have to get down there soon as I have been up north chasing walleyes and had a great time. How did you do for size on crappie? Thanks for invite and will keep the LOZ in mind for this fall.

I just started the nightstalking deal last year(mainly to get out of the heat and traffic). but i love it in the Summer. Where did you go Walleye fishin, Rathbun must be loaded with them. I've only caught one before the trip up there, literally lost count of the 10 to 12 inch eyes we caught. Kept one nice one. Crappie, a wash tub full of 9 to 10 inch fish. We put 6 in the livewell Fri. and 16 Sat. Would'nt have kept them but my buddy wanted to take some home(he does'nt get to fish often). All were in the 10 inch are so range, i did get one around 15 1/2 Sat. Hope to try it again this year. As PJ said, i bet a guy could have a ball in the summer night fishing with lights...izzy

    Izzy,

We went up to fish lake in Southern Minnesota called Lake Tetonka by the town of Waterville. Limited out on 'eyes between 14-18" all week. We could not find any bigger fish but caught plenty around 12" and smaller, too. The walleyes bite at Rathbun really heats up as summer comes on. I have done the best in 6' or shallower just throwing cranks and trolling them. I used to go down years ago and catch them at the face of the dam when they were spawning but it was a late night thing and I am getting kind of old for that now but would love to try it again sometime. Let me know when you are heading for Rathbun again and I will try to hook up with you. It is still the best crappie lake in Iowa for size and numbers in my opinion. Some would say Red Rock however last year and this at Rathbun may change a few minds. Hope you are good.

    Later,
    John

Sounds like you had a good trip, John. I've never really Walleye fished on purpose, hehe. The ones we caught up there crappie fishing was alot of fun though. I'd sure would like to try some night fishin and i'll try and give you plenty of notice if i can get back up this summer...izzy

We watched part of the weigh in and talked to a few of the guys, they said it was pretty tuff. Seen the points leaders only had 4lbs something. We wound up with 6 Fri. and 16 Sat. with a nice walleye to boot. 1-15 1/2" and the rest in the 9 to 10 inch range. Waygate, thanks again for the help. We picked up a few off the spots you told me about. Not alot of fish, but had a good time and will try it again next year...izzy
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I haven't had internet access until just now. We chose wrong unfortunately. When we
got to our starting area, there were about 20 boats already in there. Most were sitting right on top of MY brush piles I had previously put out. I had to choose between 2 to start on that had produced really good fish earlier in the week, and both had not been found by the other boats. The one we went with, I had caught a 2.55 lb female, and a 1.64 Black male off of the week before. We thought it was our best shot.

We got plagued by little fish, and just when we'd decided to move over to my other spot, another boat pulled in to it, and never left!!! Long story short... they won the tournament, and we ended up going searching for other fish with our 22nd place finish. We qualified for the Classic, but I was very disappointed in our finish. It was the worst I think I've ever had on Rathbun. The same brush pile that the winners were fishing, still held enough fish to win the tournament again, if there would have been a 2nd event on Sunday. Most of the better fish there were right around 1.3 lbs, but nothing bigger than 1.54 lbs by my scale.

Watch out for me there in 2007!! I don't plan to make the same mistake twice!
