    Default Minnows by the pound

Does anyone know where i can order a pound of minnows near SE Iowa?

I plan on having my own minnow tank this spring and am looking to stock up right about ice out.

Also, has anyone ever mail ordered minnows before? Would they survive well?

You may have already done this but if not, I'd talk to Scott's and find out who their supplier is. It's not like you're cutting into his sales since he's done at the end of the month. Another place to check is the farm stores in the area that have "Fish Days" where they sell fish for pond stocking. They ussually have minnows for sale by the pound on their delivery truck.
A long time ago when Moyers had the baitshop in Wapello, I would arrange with him to have an extra 10lbs or so dropped off for me. I wasn't reselling so he had no problem with it. I just had to make sure I could get them as soon as they arrived because he didn't have the extra space to keep them for very long.
Just something to get you going. Good luck.

Contact your state wildlife department and they should have a list of aquaculture licensees. The licensees raise fish for stocking and minnows for sale.

Thanks guys. I didn't talk to Scott himself, but one of the ladies that knows all this stuff said his bait dealer only deals with buisnesses. Maybe i'll have to check with the bait shop in Wapello and see if they will do that for me.

I know the DNR has the name of a person in Iowa City thats on their wholesale bait dealer list. Bill Liston is his name, but i can't seem to get through to his phone. Don't even know if he's still in buisness.

there is a gas staion/bait shop on the east side of Sigourney on hwy 92 going out of town that sells minnows by the "scoop". take your minnow bucket in and they will fill it for you. a scoop will get you about 5-6 dozen. i think i paid around $5 for a scoop.

most of the bait shop in Iowa buy their fatheads by the gallon.Talk to your local baitshop and ask him what theyd charge you to buy an extra pound off them next time the wholesaler comes through. I know that Johnston bait in Johnston will sell a gallon.Good luck PJ

That shipping must be high. We buy them on farms for about 4.00 lb. I usually like bigger minnows. Are there no minnow farmers or wholesalers up there? I know the farmers around Lonoke Arkansas ship them all over in semi loads.

Here is a list if Iowa retail bait dealers.

You could try this place: Gollon Bait & Fish Farm
    5117 State Road 191, Dodgeville - (608) 935-2098

They supply many Iowa bait shops. They may ship too, I'm not sure tho.
