crappie are on here in southern indiana me and a buddy limited out yesterday in just a few hours in sripper pits

This is not a typical spring as too friggin hot and dry as hell till this rain we just got. Here 2” of rain and serious winds and turkeys breeding about 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule,,Mushrooms coming up alittle early sparse most places due to dry as heck. Needed the rain,,but now next couple days with snow squalls predicted..with to much wind. These pics are last 3 days of very early shrooms as woods is not ready yet…tooo early!!

Your spot on, seems like last few years been bone dry till April then inches of rain all at once with cold fronts and wind, finally followed by a rapid warm up. I saw a tom strutting the other day and thought it was a little early for that.

I’ve got a huge Tom, several years old, one of the fullest huge beards at least 12” plus long, past 3 weeks raising heck, flaring out and strutting up down my 850’ ridge woods that borders additional 2 miles of big woods and he has been in yard even a couple times. But,,,he only hangs around about 2 days out of a week, then moves on looking for hens. I’ve seen quite a few Tom’s and hens in fields doing their thing. Season doesn’t come in till April 24 and it’s going to be really hard to call. Now,,,I even think due to cold,,you will see less hens,,due to fact they will be in nest keeping eggs warm due to early rutting. Seen it like this before. When we first started having turkey season in Indiana, It never ran into month of May as long as it runs now. Season is late but that is the way DNR I guess wants it. I’ve harvested quite a few big birds but now don’t put in the effort as much. Also use a 12 gage muzzleloader shot gun with 5 shot loaded for additional challenge.

the season in Indiana for the southern part of state is way to late i guess since our state is so long its hard to please every one the woods are so growed up down here in the southern part you can,t see much i think it to the point of being dangerous and not counting usualy 90 plus degrees with all the ticks out in full force does,nt make for a very enjoyful hunt.but i go any way .

Ya they need to break it down by regions. It can be 90* and green in the south and 40* and snow in the north on the same day lol
