Thread: Thermocline was broken

Went to a deep stripper pit and fished this evening. I was surprised to see that in most of the about 200 acre pit the thermocline was not there. Was catching crappie at 22’ deep. Only the deeper fish were aggressive, everything shallow would not bite. Water was low 80s to high 70s.

Most all of your strip pits are spring fed…I used to scuba dive a lot of pits around Brazil and Staunton especially on AMax property and would always be amazed at the fish in hot summer stacked up where the colder springs were releasing small amounts of spring water due to colder temps. Fish are going to congregate where colder water, oxygen levels best suit them. I can see where you might have a broken thermocline. I would make a map..and mark the underwater springs to fish by jon boat. All I had back in the early 70’s was a flasher graph. Couple of the strip pits south of Staunton have trout released by DNR in them as they are deep and have cool water to support these types of fish. My brother has caught large trout out of one.
