Not necessarily, we have caught them down in 40' of water. The weekend before they were shallow in the creeks at pre-spawn. Then a cold front with heavy rains and they moved out to 40. . The following weekend they were back in the creek.

We have found this at different times of the year, so its not just in the spring.

You confused yet? LOL Every BOW is different... I've caught them 45 foot down and 2 foot down in the same day. Crappie really only care about three things 1) oxygen 2) food 3) stable water. If the shad are in 2' FOW so are the crappie January through December. Scientifically the same fish won't go from 10 to 40 in a week, because of the swim bladder adjustment. Crappies will however have different feeding times based on water depth, barometric pressure, and water clarity. Unless it's a very drastic change in BP, crappies are biting somewhere, don't stay on a spot to long, keep moving until you find a feeding school. We all struggle... And usually the more you struggle, the more you learn.
