I would have point out his boat also and asked to see that particular law in writing.
I would think any CO would have a copy of the law he was writing a ticket for.
Sounds like his was a bit teed off that he didn't find anything wrong with license & boat safety check, then again maybe it was his time of the month.................
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.....

"What color numbers would you recommend sir, the same color as the numbers on your boat?".
At least he was out there, I just hope he treats the pleasure boaters the same as anglers whether he is PO'd or not.
If I noticed it, I'd of had to point it out. Very politely.
Here's the law:
Display of Number and Decals
140 IAC 9-4-2
The registration number and excise tax decals must be displayed as follows.
•Number must be painted, applied as a decal, or otherwise affixed to both sides of the bow.
•Number must read from left to right on both sides of the bow.
•Number’s color must contrast sharply with its background.
•Number must be in at least three-inch-high BLOCK letters.
•Letters must be separated from the numbers by a two-inch space: IN 8811 BM.
•Number must be a single color and clearly legible from a distance of 100 feet.
•Excise tax decals must be affixed on both sides of the bow, to the right of and within three inches of the number.
•No other numbers may be displayed on either side of the bow.

I thought there was something in the rules about contrasting but did not realize it was "sharply contrasting".
I am in violation, my numbers are in a script not block. They have been on the boat since 1996, guess I am about due for a warning.
I'll just throw this out there. When any of you complainers put on a uniform, vest, gun, and badge everyday. Be it a CO, Trooper, Deputy, or Town Officer and your loved ones know it may be the last time they see you walk through that door, then you can complain all you want. Do you think that CO put those numbers on his boat personally? Of course he didn't, he was issued that boat out of the motor pool by the state. He has no control over what was on the side of that boat, but I can guarantee you one thing. A smart mouthed comment would have done you nothing but have gone ahead and gotten you that ticket. Why don't you just be thankful he pointed out the law and brought it to your attention, before another CO who was really having a bad day or a rookie CO fresh out of academy did cite you for it. He simply pointed it out and now you have the opportunity to correct it. So do a lot of others on here who we obviously not aware of the law because they did not bother to read the boating guide as thoroughly as they should have. Just remember, ignorance is no excuse. Before anyone wants to jump down my throat, yes I do wear a badge proudly in the state of Indiana and I am not afraid to defend one of my brothers. Even though I am not a CO we are all on the same team.
If its a state law. A state boat should comply.
Happy Hooken.....
Another case of "Do as I say, Not as I do".
