Go to Tractor Supply and get a roll or 2 of Equine Leg Wrap. I use it on the foam grips of my Metal Detectors. It self-clings, so when it gets dirty, peel it off & replace it.

Even comes in Camo Last I bought I think was $5/4-rolls

Sand it down with steel wool, to clean it up. Then coat with a spray sealant. It will hold up longer than the rod.

I used Birkenstock (flip flops/sandle) cork treatment, and it makes the cork last as long as the rod!
