Well, it is warmer down south. I havent seen any in beautiful downtown Beech Grove. But, I haven't seen any since I've lived here.
While I was fishing, wife killed a copperhead today in our outside fire pit in front yard, then missed one 2.5 ft copperhead at side of house. Snakes are out!!

Wife killed 2 copperheads Tuesday, then got another one yesterday in driveway. They were about 2 to 2.5 ft long. Seems they are coming out of the flooded lowlands and warming up in this heat.

That is a bit scary for the untrained eye. In Columbus we may be a bit north of the critters domain but I don't know that.
My wife and I do venture south of here frequently, fish from shore but this does give me concern, A Copperhead bite can be serious, am I wrong?
A couple of years ago we fished at Hardy and thought we saw a Water Moccasin swallow a small gill, my research told me that they aren't around here.
Back in the early 60's my sister and I watched a program called Dr Hopp and friends. It was produced by Indiana State University (I lived in Terre Haute). He said there were no poisonous snakes in Indiana but through listening and reading I have found that to be untrue. Brown County State Park has a healthy population of rattle snakes (don't remember which one).
Anyway Cevans I appreciate your report and have followed it with interest.

Take any snake bite serious especially if it’s poisonous. Back in the late 60’s as a teenager, killed a couple of timber rattlers around Mansfield Res. right after they built it, mushroom hunting. There used to be a few around there. Killed one in Martin Co 25 yrs ago here where I now live. Seen them in Chas Dream Wilderness hiking it and now leave them alone as now on endangered species list. Copperheads you will mostly find in southern Indiana and we have lots in certain areas. They can get pretty mean especially when mating and molting. Avoid weeds as where you have field mice, you will have copperheads and I do own snake chaps and occassionally wear depending on my excursions out and about.

Monday morning cold front finally went thru and Monday the temp started out at 59. Darned copperheads came out laying in drive way to sun and warm. Killed 2-3.5 footers and a 2.5’ one and as was carrying them across county road at end of drive way in a shovel, county worker running a road grader down gravel road stopped and told me he had run over at least 20 copperheads grading gravel road. Haven’t seen a snake since then so they must have gotten used to the cool mornings. Crazy how the weather changes will affect their behavior. The big ones would strike the shovel.

I was relaying your story to a friend at work, she asked how you killed them. She hikes often at Brown County and McCormicks Creek and is frightened of the little devils.
Man o Man - that is scary. Stay safe!!
