sugar creek near franklin is full of them
and big ones at that
Saw two poisonous snakes in my life both in the same year about 12 years ago. My weimeraner was a pup took her along mushroom hunting she cornered a eastern rattlesnake in a treetop at Sugar Ridge. Later that year squirrel hunting met up with my son he said he shot a copperhead that struck at him. Went and looked and sure enough found a dead copperhead with some young ones crawling around close to the dead one. I never heard of reptiles protecting their young and perhaps it was all coincidence any ideas?
redearhoosier that game warden was probably correct he was likely referring to statewide. Now that's not to say there are not areas with much higher populations. I got a friend that lives next to that swamp and they are there. I too wonder what will keep them from migrating to the Patoka Wildlife Refugee and all the swamps around Huntingburg or if they are not already there but unreported. Had a guy from town that got bit by a copperhead down at German Ridge. He went outside to the outhouse to take a crap and yeah you guessed it the snake was under the toilet lid and it did not turn out very well except that he survived that ordeal.
Me and snakes....just don't get along,,blame it on Vietnam..but I live in copperhead country,,and now been about 6 yrs since I seen my last little timber rattler,,,but,,mushroom season is coming,,and with the wrm up..so is the snakes. 2 yrs ago had to replace the water softner exit hose as it was clogged up,,and when I went under the house,,4 of the largest black snakes came out next to my head with the wife holding a light spotting them or any snake for that matter for me. I got it on,,but would rather work under the house in the winter. Besides the fact blacks are a man's best friend,,I still can move fast as lightning for this old man,,when I see a snake. :Rfol
I was bitten on the leg by a Copperhead when I was 4 years old. I was minding my own business walking through a field with a group of people at a church picnic. Ever since then I have been terrified of snakes. I don't care if it is a "good" snake or a "bad" snake. If I see one, it's a dead snake. Sorry if that offends anyone. Also, if anyone doubts the amounts of Copperheads, come on down here to hilly Southern Indiana. Specifically Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Crawford, Perry counties.
I have heard if you have black snakes you will not have poisonous snakes around any truth to that
Black snakes and copper heads don't get along. I have a few black snakes that end up under the house during the summer,,and no copperheads. But I seem to get a copperhead in the dang garage every summer for about 2 weeks..then it finally leaves. Have yet to get a black snake in the garage, but ready to put one in there. Black snakes will eat copperheads or at least,,that is what all the old timers have always swore to that I have been told. Here's a video of it happening.

I've got goosebumps just reading about all these snakes! There is a HUGE snake in the quarry near my house. Her name is BIG MAMMA. She's a cottonmouth and has approached my kayak. Also, I've seen her with other littler snakes. I'm not sure if they are her kids or just water snakes. Do Canadian geese eat snakes? I've not seen any snakes yet this year, but plenty of geese.
