Yes, killed a baby Copperhead when I was teenage, which was a very long time ago, I am 63. We were sucba diving at a quarry in Logansport. Put it in a glass jar and took it home to one of my friends fathers and he confirmed it. Havent seen any since.

i do however do not advocate killing non poisonous snakes. They are good for the enviroment and keep the rodent population down. If you see a snake and cant from a distance id it leave it alone and call the cops. They don't like these calls but they will come and try to id it for you.

All three pit vipers natural to Indiana have triangular heads. They also have cat like eyes. You can get a pair of field glasses and observe from a safe distance. Should you run over one with a mower, and destroy the head. Turn it over with a shovel , hoe or some other long tool. A pit viper will have one scale pattern on the underside from head to the tip of his tail. A non-posionous snake will have a one scale pattern from head to the anus, and a two scale pattern after the anus to the tip of the tail, you can remember this by non-posinous is two words.

Never handle a posinious snake even after you are sure it is dead, It still has veneom in those fangs and even a scrape across the fang can casue major problems. Hope this will help.

From a technical scientific standpoint there are no "poisonous" snakes. The correct term is "venomous". They inject a toxic substance into the body through a hollow structure called a fang.

The wife just called me,,and right now,,all wildlife is getting into a transition period of summer to fall or winter..she just went outside to go to work and saw about a 3.5 ft copperhead laying in the middle of the garage,,grabbed the shovel and tried to kill it,,and ran it under the freezer without touching it..and wanted to let me know,,she shut the garage doors with it still in there for me to mess with when I get home. I'd really like to know that its out of there or better yet ,,that big,,they get mean,,and would like to find it and kill it before it gets too cool and it decides to winter in there,,then in the spring,,might be a female and have babys,,this could get messy..and I don't want the dog or grandkids running into it either,,so if you think there is maybe no poison snakes in Indiana,,I can maybe show you a biggie..lol..what a mess. Lots of places for this one to hide in my garage which is pole barn style built.

got home from work last nite at 5:30 and tore everything out of garage. moved the freezer and extra fridge even looked inside the compressor comparments,,moved everything out completely,,just got done moving everything back in, and leaving the garage doors open for a few days,,no jake the snake..will keep looking as there is no where for him to go unless he squeezed out under the front garage doors,,only time will tell.

For 2 days and nites,,been turning everything over continually and looking for this copperhead in the garage. Wife kept saying because I had the doors open 24/7 that he had crawled out,,I kept saying he is hiding in the compressor area (warmest spot in unheated garage) of the freezer..Finally at 10 am this morning long after I had checked the garage again this morning before going to work,,there he lay in the middle of the garage again,,and what does she grab? I had all the shovels and hoe laying around and she grabs a garden rake,,misses the snake,,but chases it out the door into the edge of the woods..no kill,,but at least its gone out of the garage. I just felt and knew as something kept telling me,,when he is ready to get out of dodge and leave,,he would show up and sure enough,,he finally showed when he was ready. Keep your eyes about you as we are in the transitional period when the critters are looking for places to hold up as the weather is changing and now its Fall. Winter not far off. Good luck fishing as I am in a hunting mode the rest of the year, and next will will be backpacking part of the Applachian Trail in North Carolina. Peace!

    Default copperheads and rattlesnakes

I live in Owen county Indiana. I have seen a copperhead twice here. I have seen a copperhead on a jobsite once in Lawrence county. And I have seen a rattlesnake in brown county out by camp palawopec. Not sure if I spelled that right lol.

I killed a cottonmouth in a gravel pit bordering the White River north of Indy years ago. Wouldn't say it's likely or common, but it can happen. Don't believe everything the DNR tells ya.
