Default PSA - Highland Old City Lake - Construction and Fall Trout Season

In a couple days (hopefully), re-construction will start on the spillway of the OLD City Lake Spillway. With this, the lake will be dropped 6' for the work. Due to this, there will be NO Fall trout Stocking/Season this year.

Sounds like much needed repairs. I hope all goes according to plan.

    Sorry for the delayed reply.
Yes , MUCH needed repairs. The old spillway/lake was constructed in the 1920’s. It had been “modified” several times since. Some of those modifications caused issues. Old spillway is gone. New footings poured, forms started going up today for the walls.
Once all is said and done, the lake level will be higher (back to original actually), than it had been. Due to this, the existing riprap has been pulled up, to the predicted level. More will be added later, if needed.
While the lake is down, a long stick trackhoe is coming in, to remove sediment, as far as it can reach.
The existing footings were MUCH thicker and deeper than what the original plans called for! Yes , the original plans were found.
It’s crazy to think how that was made, without modern equipment. How long did it take? How many people, man hours involved?

    Update -
At this point, next week, after a culvert is replaced, and some dredging done, the temporary overflow pipe will be removed. Thus, allowing the lake to refill.

    Project complete.
Lake was dropped approximately 7', approximately a 20 acre lake. Any guesses on how long to refill? New lake level will be a couple feet higher than what it was, it's actually going back to the original level, when lake was dug 100 years ago. It's fed by a couple springs, unsure how many acres the watershed is.
