Just renewed mine yesterday... Kept my TA plates because I was skeptical about the ST plates.. Girl working at the local DMV said good thing. BIG fines coming for the ST plate holders.. I didn't renew last year, just took my chances.... It cost $36 this year and she gave me a new plate with the renewal sticker....

Interesting. I have 2 boat trailers with the ST plates and plan on keeping them. When I bought them last year, the Secretary of State office had no problem taking my money and issuing me these plates, while knowing exactly what the plates were being used for. I guess I'll see if I get a big fine and if I do we'll see what the judge has to say about it.

I have to agree with this. I walked into our DMV, not even knowing about the "ST" plates, and told them I needed to renew my plates for both of my boats and my 5x10 utility trailer. They didn't even give me the option of the other, asked for my money for the ST plates, gave me registration to go along with them, told me they are "lifetime", and sent me on my way.

DMV should know the laws, expectations, and allowances of the state, and issued me what they issued me. I didn't argue with them due to the cost, but this is what their Secretary of State workers issued me. If I get pulled over, my registration says "boat trailer" on it. I didn't type that up....it was issued by the state, by a state DMV employee. I don't feel as though I am being dishonest, as honesty and integrity is what I base my life on. I paid what was asked of me to pay by the state's trained employees, have the receipt and registration to prove it I did my part there, I hold insurance on my trailer that I'm pulling, have a state issued plate on the trailer that coincides with the VIN number on the trailer. I guess we'll have to see how it all plays out, if it ever does.

I wasn't planning on taking the state to court if I received a ticket but I do have the option to go before a judge to plead my case. Hopefully the traffic court fees aren't too high.

    Plates go by weight.

Believe the TA plate is 0-3000 lbs and TB is 3001-?lbs

Brakes are required on at least 1 axle for trailers over 3000 lbs in Illinois, from what I remember.

The TB plate rate was not reduced, just the TA plate.
