Thread: Ice depth reports

wheres your area if you dont mind me asking? im in christian county and would like to go try alittle ice fishing. last time i was out with daughter the ice was only maybe 2 1/2" thick. needless to say we wasnt able to fish. but if the ice has thickened up i would love to get my daughter out for her first time ice fishing.

His profile says his home lake is Shelbyville, I would think he would at least be somewhat close. I would think there is plenty of ice.

Im on 10 to 12 inches if not more in some spots this is in kankakee county

One pond is in Douglas county, the co-workers pond is in Vermillion county. Seems there is plenty of ice this year! Personally dont go on it myself, im an old sailor and need open water to feel comfortable, lol!

I second the advice about going out with someone. I broke through the ice on New Years Day where a spring was running under the ice. Thanks God it was fifty years ago when I was in my late twenties. I had a forty mile drive to get home and another forty miles back to finish my fishing - the crappie were biting great that day. My wife couldn't believe I was returning to the lake. I do have to admit that when you feel that ice break under your feet the adrenalin starts to flow bigtime. I had no idea the depth of the water at the time and was glad my feet hit bottom at armpit depth. It took my "boys" several days to warm up however. I thought about sitting on a hot water bottle on my return trip to the lake but quickly dismissed that idea as I knew my wife would never let me live that down.

My co worker in Vermilion County was checking ice depth on his pond again yesterday he said he had a fairly consistent 10 inches. A long winter is looking longer!

I was on 3 differant ponds yesterday and the 1st one had 4", 2" bad ice and 2" of good ice. The other 2 ponds had over 8" of ice and was half good and bad ice and that was in Shelby Co.
