Default Motor Problems (50 HP Mercury)

Hey All, Looking for a little help. I have a 50hp Merc. that's not getting full power. I was running it at top end and all of sudden it fell flat on it's face. I took cover off and found the white wire coming from the stator was burnt and the coating on wire was gone. I fixed that and still no good. I replaced the power pack and still nothing. Any suggestions? It starts fine, runs great with ears on it, put it in neutral and revs up fine. Seems just when its under load.

    Thanks for all replies.....TT

How long since you ran your motor prior to this?

It might be a fuel problem i.e. carbs or a blockage in the fuel line somewhere or it could be more serous like a blown piston. A easy way to do a quick check is pull the spark plugs and check the color. They all should be a light chocolate color with no metal on them.

My '86 Merc 90 hp had the stator fail. I could only run just above idle. This happened 20 miles from ramp. If i tried to go to WOT the motor would increase rpm's but fall back to idle right away. I idled all the way back. Shop put in a new stator and problem solved. At the time motor was 15 years old.

Had an older Evinrude 65 that acted like that. Found the bottom carb (of 3) had the hard shell of a little beetle blocking gas to that carb. Literally a bug in the fuel line. G's comment might be on target.

Most likely you'll need to replace the stator. A burnt wire leading to it is no good. If you can go with a CDI stator, they do not cover their stators with a coating. Keeps them from heating up and burning up.

Here is where I'm at. My finger is pointing to the part I can't figure out. The trigger is under it.
