I don't think the fishing pressure is that great out there. I hardly ever see anyone fishing the lakes I can see from the road. Part of the big lake is actually in the state park. I would say in 15 years I have seen less than 5 people on it who came from the park. For a while there was even a road and a boat ramp on the park end of the lake. I will tell you which lake if everyone promises not to go past the private property signs. Sorry not my lake, I just have permission to fish it. The good news is I think the best big crappie spot on the lake is in the park, the bad news is the best spot for numbers is not.

Dad and I fished the totally private lake yesterday. The crappie were not very active. We only caught about a dozen small ones. We saw a couple of large ones but they wouldn't bite. The biggest fish looked to be around 14 inches. It was hovering between a big rock and a log about 6 feet away from the boat. We were actually bouncing our jigs off of the fish and it didn't care. Somehow dad foul hooked it with the jig for about 2 seconds. After about a 30 second delay the fish came back, strange. The bass fishing wasn't too bad. We had three over three pounds and about 20 smaller fish. Today would probably be a better day if you don't mind dodging raindrops. Light winds, no clouds and clear water can make for tough fishing.

thanks for all the info Koko, i am definetly going to go back down there. maybe next weekend. i would go today but i wasted the morning cleaning the damn house and it is about a 1.5 hour drive for me. when i used to go down to pyramid i always stayed on the older lakes because it is better scenery and you can spot some really nice birds if you are into that. i was never really a fan of lakes in open fields, even though they can produce killer fish. maybe i will run into you down there sometime. i just noticed you are from my area, what is the quickest route to get there from st. louis? i usually left from belleville, IL because my buddies used to live over there. and the one time i left straight from here it seemed to take much much longer.

I take 3 south to 154 east (at the 4 way stop in red bud go straight) then a few miles past sparta turn right on county line road turn left at the scuttle inn and golf course (about a mile or so past the train tracks) then it is 10-15 miles down the road. The owner was going to go out there today. I don't know if the weather scared him off or not. I would think fishing would be more difficult on clear lakes in open fields. I usually route my fishing along the lake based on the shade. I do enjoy all the wildlife you find out there. It sounded like the ducks were throwing a party, there were woodpeckers pecking away and I have heard quite a few turkey out there this year. No deer or beavers yet this year, but it is only April 2. One more thing about yesterday, the bluegill/redear fishing was very good. We actually caught more of those than crappie on our jigs. They pull hard and some of them were in the 9 inch range.
