    Default Big Pond Today

Had clients wanting to walleye fish today and just learn areas to work. We crappie fished for 40 minutes and got our unders and eight overs and off we went to walleye fish. We caught tons of whites today probably a hundred or so. Every spot I tried for a walleye they weren't biting. Talked with a guy who I know has been walleye fishing every day last week and he got several before the cold snap but slow now. They should be fired up in the next week or so but for now I am hammering the white bass on ledges in 14 feet of water. The 5/8 oz. Candystriper reeled right on bottom real slow bringing it up the drop off, they just hammer it. Had a ball something different than fishing willows.

Like you, I have never caught a "legal" sized Walleeye but hope to this year too! Thanks for the report Steve and good talking with you last week.

Last year, where ever you caught whites, the walleyes were in with them, you just had to weed through a bunch to get them. I think the walleyes move with the whites, and feed with them. I'll be chasing them for the next couple of weeks. Last year the walleyes I caught, were mostly on #4 and #3 blue fox vibrax spinners and similar lures. I know a lot of people were catching them on the 300 series bandits, but they were in real shallow water. I know that there is always more than one way to skin a cat, or catfish.

last years walleye fishing was unreal. seemed like everytime we went out we got our limit. and in just a few hours. the best walleye fishing iv ever seen on shelbyville. b a whole different story this year tho. some walleye follow the the schools of whites around and pick off the cripples. but its hard to keep em off the hook long enough for a walleye to find it. and its just too dang fun.

If any of you guys like to fish for white bass, you need to get some of Steve's candystripers. I got a call on my phone, so I was vertically jigging this lure, and caught 5 fish before I ended my conversation. I was talking to "Talon". I take the trebble hook and cut off one barb and then smash the other two barbs down. Lots easier to release the fish and doesn't hurt the fish if you aren't keeping them.

You can jig this lure or pop it off the bottom after a long cast and let it fall back down, or what I like to do is let it settle, then reel about 5 cranks and let it settle again, you can also just reel it slow enough to keep it off the bottom. Great fun.

Never worried about hurting a white bass. Then again, I have never kept one either. When I catch em by accident crappie fishing. There is usally some profanity involved.
I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin' and hook up with them later.

I will side with Jerry on this one the candystriper is a great bait. Yesterday i caught crappie, walleye, whitebass, largemouth, and drum on it. There was a period when i could not get it to the bottom before a fish would hit it. Using Jerry's trick with the hook makes it almost impossible to snag the lure. If you hang just gently wiggle the rod and the weight of the bait usually frees the hook.
