    Default Guides on Here!!

To those of you who guide or take people to spots what are your thoughts on someone taking a gps. I saw a post on a walleye forum where someone was going on a guided trip and planned on taking a gps to save spots that the guide took him to. I do not believe this is ethical as this is how the guide makes his living and he or she works hard to stay on top of things.

What are the opinions of those of you who make a living guiding for crappie? Do you care if a client brings along a gps or map to save spots that you take them??

I understand that you guys are great teachers but i think that the client should learn the patterns and techniques instead of mooching spots.. Maybe I'm wrong and i dont have issues taking people to spots but I'm not feeding my family by fishing.

Talon and Ranger Z21, Frank and Darlene Lawhead and XXL have most if not all of my waypoints but I also just listed five of my closest friends and they all respect the fact that I am making a living at this and in no way would they impede on a spot I want to fish. I have even told XXL early in the week that I intend to fish a certain area in an upcoming tourney and he will leave it alone and tell nobody what I had told him. That is a true friend. I give him a hard time about being the biggest thief on the lake but when I break down and believe me it has happened he is the one I call and he always comes running. Talon has all my waypoints but yet I never see him when I am on the lake and he is as well and he has told me that is on purpose. He knows the pattern I am on and he is trying something different. Those listed have all told me they will go to their grave with those waypoints and leave instructions in their will to delete them after they are gone. No amount of money can get them.

As for any new client or old wanting to bring a GPS sorry no way. I have enough followers and binocular spys.

I figured this was the kind of response that this would get I just cant understand why somebody would think this is a good thing to do. I guess some people are to lazy to do work on there own and to disrespectful to let others enjoy there own hard work. To those of you who guide my hats off to you for your efforts. Waterfowling has taken me all over and i know what it feels like to have a spot burned out. Anyways I'm done with my rant good luck and be safe...

I have shared a few way points with other guides and some other guides have shared a few with me BUT if I ever see a client get a GPS out we will be headed to the ramp right then.

Yeah, there is way to much hard work and time on the water involved with setting structure to allow a gps! I wouldn't have any problem with a client bringing a map so he could realize what areas of the lake we were on, but my policy is no gps and I think most guides have the same.

I am not a guide, I would consider using a guide on Rend or Shelbyville, I think it is very direspectful to even ask if I could bring a GPS to mark the spots a guide took me too. Same with using binoculars to see where you are catching fish, however I am not opposed to asking what pattern is working that day. Just my opinion!!

Over the years, I've hired three different guides here on S-ville. Steve was really the only one who made an attempt to teach me something, and that takes a lot of effort. I'm not bashing the other guides, it's just that Steve helped me the most. I probably heard him speak 20 times before I hired him. If you hire a guide, ask him a ton of questions that you have. You don't need to have waypoints from him to learn when, how , and where to catch crappie. If you watch and listen to this board, you will also learn a bunch. Don't be afraid to pm some people and ask some questions, the worst they can do is not answer. Cant' wait for the action to begin.

I would like to apologize about a post I made to XXLFISH about having some binoculars hunting for Steve just joking. I don't even own a pair to start with. Like Jerry said, you learn alot from Steve by taking a trip with him. I went with him almost a yr ago in April and he put us on fish and had our limit. He does teach you alot and I would highly recommend him. He shares his knowledge and if you ask him something on here or pm, he will get back to you and help you out. Since going with him, I did alot better this year by myself than I ever have. He even took me and my daughter to a place while he had clients and showed us where the white bass were, boy did my daughter have a blast asking if every white bass she hauled in was a keeper. People on this forum are very helpful and like XXLFISH said, you can learn alot and the patterns by paying attention. Going to Tri State trolling motor on Thursday to look at these down scan imaging units. Sure am getting anxious when all this ice goes away.

Most of the knowledge that I use to catch fish when I can get down to s-ville stems from 4 hours in the boat with Steve, and only 3 of them crappie fishing. What I learned in that time coupled with a 798 and posted info from CDC guys that are willing to point me in the right direction when I am heading down (I live 150 miles away) are where I now have derived most of my knowledge that I have about crappie fishing.... I am by no means an expert, but I now almost always catch fish where in the past it was a gamble...

I am still to figure out how to catch fish in the rivers and creeks and always spend at least a day in the spring and fall when I am down that time.... I have actually been contemplating another trip with LSG when they are on that pattern to add to my arsenal, AND it will be money well spent!

BTW no gps needed, just the pattern learned and techniques with the electronics!
