I only used the 2# excel mono, never had any reason to change. If your fishing in the 30' depth or more then braid might be a good choice. If your fishing for walleye or northern then I would def use braid.

I use Micro Ice in 3lb for panfish and 6lb for walleye/bass.

I personally use braid as my main line. But always use a flurocarbon mono leader. Leader is within 2- 8 test depending upon species being fished for.

I only fish panfish walkon here in Metro lakes: 2# Gamma ESP Ice.

I use the 4# Gamma ice early and late in the open water season when cold water stiffens their standard co-polymer or when I have to downsize from 1/32 oz jig heads.

Edit I get my Gamma directly from the manufacturer Black Knight Industries online. Rumors that Gamma was discontinued and no longer available were always false.

My standard summer offering is 1/32 oz and I like the 4# Polyflex . If I go smaller I will go to the 4# ESP (which has about half the diameter and half the breaking strength for much longer casts with the little offerings). Through the ice I use 2# ESP. All clear rather than colored lines, but since I am an addicted line watcher the new Panfish Optic Yellow is very interesting. I expect that would need a flourocarbon leader though, which is not necessary for the clear.

I prefer the copolymer to a braid, because we tangle with a surprisingly large number of bonus game fish often well over line test, in some cases well over both official and actual line test. The extra stretch is an added cushion for the ultralight equipment we use for crappies. Gamma holds up and has significantly less memory than the other brands we have tested it against. I will have to admit that Suffix Ice Magic has matched up against the Gamma as well as any other.

I order my Gamma on line directly from Black Knight Industries. Their service has always been good, with very prompt shipments.

Works for me all year for all species. Not sure if line visibility matters much but if does, fc is the least visible - just in case. But f/c also seems to have less drag when working lures either vertically or horizontally. The least line bow is IMO important for sensitivity.

Mono is also ok in 4-6 lb test as a leader. Never cared for straight braid except when fishing for larger fish species.
