Default Home made Ice fishing sled.

Lets say I'm anxiously waiting for Ice fishing time. I have been working on my new sled and am about half way done. Still need to make some stow-able brackets for the new gas powered drill, some rod holders, fiberglass the runners and put some finish on it.

Looks kinda like a glide-lite. I'm not even sure they are made anymore.

I run across some kids cross country skis and bent up some little L brackets to mount them. We have had pretty good ice this year and the Eskimo gas auger has been great at drilling through 13" of ice. Headed out again tomorrow.

Ok I have never ice fished but it sure looks interesting. I see that you have a cutout for your bucket and then you have a compartment with a hinged lid. Would you mind please explaining the different purposes of these parts of the sled? Do people make their sleds different lenghts or are they all about the same? Do some carry portable ff and stick them thru the ihole once drilled? Thank You.

I just have to say that after last winter the last thing I wanted to see is something relating to ice. lol

The hinges compartment would carry tackle boxes and goodies while the pail is for fish and maybe carrying a minnow bucket onto the ice. Cold air and water splashing around is not good company.

Most ice anglers carry portable flashers with them and the transducers are set in the hole cut in the ice, yes. Cameras are another popular option. The sleds can look "busy" what with all the hardware attached but generally every piece of this is used in strapping equipment on or to carry equipment in a fashion that makes getting to it easy.

Guys with portable ice shelters forgo the sled stuff and just strap everything to the top of the shelter. Rods, flashers and tackle can go inside the folded down shelter to keep it safe while transporting. It becomes a "process" and these sleds help keep things moving forward with relative ease.

Tom is spot on. I carry tackle boxes in the hinged area along with snacks, water etc and my new Marcum LX5 flasher. I have since built a spud bar for chipping and checking ice and it can mount on clips on the side of the sled. I just built it to the size I thought was right for me and be as lite as possible.
