I use a 243 and also a 25 06 and a 7mm 08, like them all, because of low recoil and flat shooting. Use Nosler Accubonds and Partitions mostly, sometimes Ballistic Tips. The main thing is proper bullet placement, and he will be there.
.243 has been my gun of choice for over 10 years now. Killed a 12pt, dropped him where he stood! 100gr Core Loks are my bullet of choice. Watch the brush and put the lead where it counts and you will have dead deer to fill up your freezer! Makes a great varmint gun as well.

Got crappie?:D
My son, which is twelve has shot two deer with his 243, nice doe and a huge 8 pt buck, thing weighed in at 195 lbs field dressed! wheewww! was rather heavy trying to hang up in the tree! the doe dropped in her tracks and the big boy ran about 30 yds, using remington core lokt ammo, those things are destructive!!! thats all we shoot in our rifles. I by the way< shoot the Remington VTR in 308 win with a Nikon tactical scope,,, AWSOME RIG!!
ugliest crappie you ever seen
Necked down 308, gets its in-herrant accuracy from its parent cartridge, fast, lots of energy. Due to calber of bullet and weights of factory ammo available, shot placement is pretty important.
My daughter shot an over 200lb 8 pointer today it bottomed out the check station scales, with her new savage 243 went about 15 feet and buckled over!
My first deer rifle was a 243. I was in my 30's when I took to chasing deer and it came with lots of recommendations. I now have permission to hunt some local hayfields and wanted a little more downrange power. After looking at ballistic comparisons I went with the 270. If you look at the 243-100gr bullet compared to the 270-130 gr they are almost identical in flight characteristics. My 270 drops em like a bad habit just like the 243 has done for years. There is no learning curve when remembering bullet drop etc. Now I have 2 to love. Don't plan on hunting dangerous or big game so I have no need for the big bore stuff.
