savage/stevens model 200

Does anyone have one of these rifles? I was thinking of getting my boy one of these in 243. I seen one at a gun shop for $320 new, I have a savage model 111 in 270 and really like it but I`ve never seen one of these stevens model 200, how accurate and dependable are they? for the price it would be hard to beat,,,but,,,,you also get what you pay for, I`ve never had a problem with the savage that I have and dont see a problem with the model 200 but if anyone out there has one of these or knows anything about them I would like to hear about it before I make the decision to buy it

It is supposed to be a model 111 minus the accutrigger. I have not seen anything bad about them. I would buy one.

Sorry I was short before but wife finished cooking and was time to put on the feed basket. Anyway they are very usable rifles, won't win a beauty contest but do shoot very well. Check out greybeards outdoors forums and there is plenty praise for them. Like I said if I was in need of a rifle for my sons or daughters and couldn't find anything used in mint cond. I would deffinately go that route. Well I might just would buy one without checking around. Its based on the 110 action and barrel without great trigger and upgraded stock.I do not think you would be dissappointed.

thanks for the info,,yeah it aint real pretty but after all it will be used for hunting so I`m sure it will get banged up anyway,,pretty sure its the one I`m gonna get for him,,thanks again

Last year I played with some Savage rifles, had 2-223 and a 308. Great rifle for the money. The 223 bench rest would deliver 1/2 in groups at 100 yds from the box, and got better as I tailored the loads. The accu-trigger makes all the difference in the world. The Stevens you speak is a bare bones version of these. One of the shooters at the range built a heavy barreled 243 on the Stevens action. Flawless. Didn't use the standard trigger, but switched to a Rifle basics brand with good results. Savage/Stevens barrels aren't the cleanest from the factory, but after 300 to 500 shots are as good as any other on the market. I believe there is a trigger comparable to the accu-trigger available on the Stevens, and I would recommend spending the few extra dollars to have that trigger on the gun you purchase. Savage wins lots of tourneys in the stock rifle division, and the trigger is a big part of those wins. There is a man at the range where I shot named Pete. When he spoke, everyone shut up and listened. He's now retired but worked in the gun and ammo industry a lot of his life. Most of the guns he now shoots are Savages, all have the accu trigger. well I bought the rifle today and brought it home but kept it hidden in the car, the boy has been naggin me all summer about when he was gettin his new rifle, I mean every single day but I will say this he will be 13 on his b-day in Oct and he has worked his butt of this summer mowing and doing chores and saved his money to buy this rifle, well ol dad kept his money socked away for him so he wouldnt get the urge to splurge and bought the rifle today and had it outiftted with scope...

came home acted like nothing going on, hung out with the boy down in the man cave talked of course about the upcoming deer season and dad ? wander when I`m gettin my new rifle? while we put new line on our fishing reels

while he was busy puttin fishin poles away I went out to the car and got the empty boxes that the rifle and scope came in and brought em into the house,,the look on his face was priceless when he seen the boxes and even more priceless when he discovered they were empty:D yeah I know ...but I couldnt resist it,,,,,so he throws the boxes down and practically rips the door off the hinges trying to run out to the car to look for his new rifle,,,the biggest smile on a kids face is worth a million words:D and of course the first words out of his mouth,,,,when we goin shootin?

Yeah it was priceless! but I remember those days when I was young like that and getting those suprises from my dad too, now I know how he felt :D

Exactly.....can't say I'm squrriel hunting with a .303 and just keep missing
