I use both salt and mineral blocks. Deer work em over..
we use lot's of varieties on our place in woods , from fancy to not , our animals for whatever reason have a definitive like for these here " pink" blocks from tractor supply.
the images below show one that is 2 weeks old , the first image was 1 week on the ground with 2 bites out of 2 corners and the second week it looked like it does now ....
even pigs hit it ....go figure ....and they ain't even supposed to like salt blocks
I use both salt and mineral blocks. Deer work em over..

This started about 35 years ago.
A tree was cut down at the end of mom's garden that left a 10" diameter stump. The stump was 85 yards from the tractor shed at the barn. I laid out extension cords and drilled a few holes in it and filled them with plain table salt. Every trip to her house I'd add more table or rock salt. After a couple of years the stump was getting smaller and a hole around it was getting larger. A couple of more years the stump was decaying pretty good. While shopping I picked up a pack of Deer-cocaine and read the label, sugar, salt, molasses and calcium. Didn't say how much of each. I got the largest bottle with the highest dose of calcium from the drug department. Put it in a jug and added boiling water. At the stump in the spring I poured all in layers. 5 lb sugar, 10 lb salt, 1/2 gallon of calcium and 1 gallon molasses from the co-op. Every trip I'd add more sugar, salt or molasses. By November the stump was almost gone with a 2 ft hole around it. Wood chips and dirt were most likely eaten.
Deer would show up just before dark everyday. The shed was a good place to sit in a good chair behind the tractor.

I don't know why...But I cannot get deer to use a mineral or salt block at our place. I even tried Deer Cocaine and other deer blends. The last 15 plus years I have used several different blocks, bags of plain salt, mineral for deer.. I Put corn and soy beans on top of block.. beans and corn are eaten right away but they just don't like mineral or salt..They had to taste the salt or mineral. 2 years ago I put a red block out, it sat for 3 months un touched as far as I could see..then suddenly the hogs destroyed it in 2 weeks. I know others who have had deer dig 12 inch deep holes by eating the soil that the salt leached into. At our place Scatter a bag of corn on ground and the deer and hogs will eat every piece once they find it.
They will only lick a block if they need to, critters are very smart that way. Theres a chance your local herd is rooting somewhere else that has the required minerals in the ground. Ive seen where underground springs push minerals to the surface and deer graze/root/drink there and are satisfied.
