Had a call to come track a big 7pt shot quartered to at about 7:30 AM. He had found blood away from shot sight and followed it about 30 yds and lost it. He called and we made a plan to take the track that afternoon. We arrived about 4:00 and Scout worked the trail the opposite way. It was at that point we realized the hunter had tracked the buck backwards. She took us about 650 yds to the DOA buck. The blood trail was actually pretty good until the last couple hundred yards so I’m glad they didn’t figure it out or the deer would have probably been jumped and went further. Pretty simple and straight forward track and we like those occasionally.

Gotta LOVE a good tracking dog. I have a half walker/half Mt Curr that has a great nose on it too. Mine has found both deer I shot with my bow this year. It was easy find for her as the farthest only went @ 100 yards. If I see the deer drop I go get my dog anyways to let her "find" it. Makes her very happy. She's found a few hogs in thickets for me too.

Was able to run a couple more tracks yesterday, teamed up with another dog on both tracks.

First track I thought was going to be a back whack (but ended up being another leg shot) but the hunter had trailed blood for about 450 yds to a point they had lost it when it crossed a flood spot in the woods. They went about 100 yds further looking for blood and couldn't find any more.

I met up with the hunter, Loren and Rory and we hit the trail. At the shot site we noticed pieces of leg bone. I turned Scout loose while Loren and Rory worked on lead. It wasn't long before I looked at the GPS and Scout was out 300 yds. She continued on to a point where she was about 600 yds from the shot site. She stopped for a second and I thought she had found the deer DOA. She then turned and come back to me and I told the hunter she had found him but he was still alive. With all the blood they had followed they felt there was no way the deer was still alive. We let Loren and Rory follow the trail and we got to the point the deer was bedded when Scout got up to him.

At this point the buck had crossed a wide open field and we felt he would be bedded not far into the woods. Loren and Rory worked that way as Scout and I stayed off to the side. Once they got to the wood line the buck jumped up and took off. We got after him and after crossing 3 creeks within a 100 yd stretch Scout and I were able to finish him off about 200 yds from where he was jumped.

The buck had traveled about 1100 yds from shot site.

Scout does not run them down like she used to before she got horned 3 times but she has taught me there are other ways to go about catching up with some of these leg shot deer, especially the ones that really will not make it.

The other was a 15 year old boys first deer shot at 9:30 in the morning. He only had hair and a piece of the meat at shot site. After walking 20-30 yards in the direction the deer went he could not find any blood. He asked for thoughts on a FB forum and received all kinds of bad answers and recommendations. I hit him up and suggested to just let it lay and we would check it out later in the afternoon.

Brayden and Huck worked this track with us again. Not going to lie, the dogs struggled to get on a good line at the start and it wasn't looking good. Both dogs would take the track in the same direction but would circle back around looking for something better. About 75 yds from shot site we decided to do a half circle and make sure we had not missed something. Scout and I worked one direction without hitting on anything and Brayden and Huck worked the other. Huck hit on a trail and about 75 yds later was at the buck. I brought Scout over that way and she hit the trail about the same spot and went straight to the buck.

I'm not sure if the buck had walked some circles throwing them off or just wasn't putting out any scent until a certain point or what. The dogs were on the right path from the start but they were just not as hard on the track as normal for some reason. But the deer had traveled about 225 yds from shot site and not a single drop of blood was found.

Some good tracks with tough conditions. Glad they found the deer. Good job.

Glad you are helping all these hunters out. And it looks like you and the puppies are having a good time.
