I had a friend in Pulaski County, Virginia who passed a number of years ago. He ran food plots and protien feeders year 'round on his property (~1,000 acres). He also managed the herd for quality bucks and does. He would allow wounded Vets come out to take scrub bucks and thin the doe numbers to help him balance the herd and maintain a 1:1 or 2:1 buck/doe ratio. He wouldn't take a chosen buck until it was 6 years old at full maturity. His trophy room was ridiculous with buck heads that looked more like bucks out of Saskatchewan, Canada than Virginia. He was a Vietnam Vet who did 3 tours as a forward observer & saw lots of bad stuff. He never expected to come home and had his family invest his pay in the land he wanted. He ran a couple of huge distribuitorships that made him tons of money, yet you'd never know it. He was one of the nicest and best peopke I ever knew.
