They used animal hides to hide underneath. Yeah, sure did. They also were very keen to smells. Ahead of a big hunt they would stop eating meat. Then they would cease emitting the molecules of a meat eater. This allowed them to get close enough to make a kill. Deer can distinguish meat eaters from vegetarians by those molecules. I suspect it would take a month of eating vegetables to smell differently.
Maybe they will bite this one……

some folks and myself practiced these scenarios closely back when we hunted in the thick stuff down in them cypress swamps , we ate chlorophyl pills for weeks in advance of the opener and for sure it will make your scent change dramatically
some years later there was place in Florida I think that started bottling chlorophyl for hunting specifically and it was sold under the name of "ghost scent" , for sure chlorophyl works quite well in odor reduction .

8 to 10 feet was an average bow kill range from what I read on the American native bowhunters

They had a lot more skin in the game. No kill no meat.

Hunting videos, electronics, feeders, and money sure changed hunting.
