Been through the trophy deer management. Leanred alot. Most important lesson I learned. Not shooting decent deer for 4-5 years just to get a chance at a monster did not pay off for me. Along came 2 consecutive years of buffalo gnats so bad lost most of the deer herd. Now got a farm full of 2 year old 8-pointers. Wasted 7 years of my life passing on fun deer to shoot. Got a new rule now, If it walks out and your heart starts pounding.......he is the one. Take him. If not, let him grow. Different people have different emotions and standards. But we are all out there for that heart pounding rush! So go hunt and have a blast and take pictures so memories are never forgotten!
he walked in on my bud in his bow blind , thats all i got of him , he let him walk on said he was young .
this much i know factually , he looks terribly tired for a young buck this time of year .
his neck should be swollen up pretty good and he has what looks a bit like a past prime rack on his head to me .
and even from an above angle he has a pretty good belly on him best i can tell .
young bucks in this part of the world at 3 to 4 or even 5 looks lots healthier than him this time of year .
he looks post rut at the start of the rut .
one thing for certain I hunted that ranch 20 years plus and there are for sure bigger bucks in there

He deserves to walk. You have plenty of pics of good eaters, shoot them instead. As far as how old? My old man was a big rack, old deer guy. When some of the young guys would talk about a good 2 1\2 year old buck with a big rack he would ask if they had a damn birth certificate for it! Times sure have changed, eh?

I used to worry about the age of the deer and after raising several bucks in a high fence ranch I came to the conclusion that it is VERY difficult to age a live Texas whitetail . I would take photos of bucks that had ear tags , many of those were bought as fawns or 1.5 year olds . Some looked really young at 6 years old and a some looked really old at 6 years old . Not sure why this occurs but to be sure a portion of them looked the age class they were in ,but a pretty fair number did not .
That said I am of the opinion that is it similar to what has been stated and that a trophy is in the eyes of the beholder and in the end it really does not matter to me much these days as to how old a deer is , it tends to be more about is it a quality food item with a nice rack ? If the answer is yes ......KABOOM ( if i have a tag) is the word
