Yep, that’s my rule of thumb. If it don’t reek of that strong boar smell. They are good to go. I normally do the work on my hitch rack basket behind my hunting vehicle Jeep Cherokee lol. Saves my back a little bit.
not if it dont stink is the rule for us
just take the back straps and boned out hams off it
let the buzzards and coyotes clean up the rest
dont gut it or hang it
just put it on its belly and work from above
the sand roll is optional btw

For me, it's if the 'nads are showing then it goes to the buzzards. If he is young enough that he doesn't have bulging 'nads, then he gets eaten (unless he stinks like a boar - I've had a few of those that had no 'nads but still had the boar stink).
i think its more about the smell than the gear , i have eaten a few pretty large boars that had gear but had no odor .
not sure if its when they rut or what but to be sure if they are ripe they will stink up everything they get near for a long time .
i had a truck back when i loaded a big stinky in and it got on my clothes as he was big and we had to wrestle .
that truck smelled like a big fat ham every time it rained until it went to rest .
aint done that since btw .....
sum kawl me tha outlaw ketchn whales
you can always take the straps and hams and give them to someone who could use them. Some folks need that protein badly and will put up with the smell. have you tried soaking in vinegar?

If they got that smell you can't eat him if you put 100ga of anything on it. I've tried, it's terrible. I've seen some the coyotes wouldn't eat

An old timer around the house will take a stinking boar back home hang it up, skin it down to the hams. Then cut a hunk of meat off and throw it in a skillet on a fish fryer. If it smells Real game/rank while cooking. He will let it down and throw it away. If it smells fine while cooking that 1 piece, he will continue skinning it out.
