Had a couple of encounters, and they’re all around us as I’m not far from the St Johns River. I like distance with them around.

Had something in the woods behind the house that the German Shepherd didn't like last year. She would go nuts. Couple of days later two black bears were hanging around a food truck about a 1/4 mile away

I was actually stalked back when by a real large boar black bear in Alaska and to be sure he scared the living daylights out of me .
I think he was in the 400 lb plus range and like almost small grizzly size and we smelled like salmon and he wouldn't quit sneaking up on us in the jungle ,and YES Alaska is jungle.
When he first appeared at about 40 feet away he laid his ears back while he glared at us . when he came sneaking back the second time we did the hey bear yell and he left again . the next time he showed up about 200 yards upstream and he was above us peeking around brush and trees at about 20 yards and didn't run off when we yelled at him .
so of course we did what you aint supposed to and ran faster than a bear for about a mile or so thru the rainforest jungle back towards where we came from .

Never smelled a bear, but I'm with Ketchn, I can smell a wild pig from a mile away. Actually just thinking about the smell makes me kind of smell it lol. Aint nothing like a stinking hog.

update on my bear friend,we met eye to eye just above my cabin again,we had a stare down mere feet from one another before he backed off, this is now the third encounter in a week with him.I don’t know what a wild hog smells like, but very familiar with the odorous domestic hog.To me a Blackbear smells like a campground outhouse crossed with a billy goat...

be extra careful with that bear they are unpredictable and I have read several articles suggesting black bears see humans as a possible food item .
more than one article I have read suggested play dead with a grizzly as it it likely a territorial thing and it will leave you be if it thinks you have become no danger to it and fight like heck with a black bear as the black bear is likely to try to kill you and eat you ….fyi
