I have killed 2 early in my 50 years of hunting. Just didn't find it to be my cup of tea. Smart and dumb just like people!
Well there's hunting turkeys, then there's shooting turkeys.
And I'm not ashamed to admit to being a turkey shooter.
An opportunist if you will, which is how much hunting ends up anyway.
I can drive the vast amount of dirt mountain roads at our PA camp very slow while looking for turkey.
As a rule they see me first and are on the run, but not always.
And at 82 it beats sitting on a porch.
Grouse like sitting on those roads also lol.

Smart or dumb,I don't care, they taste awful good right there on the plate next to the mushrooms and crappie in the spring............If you don,t like em that leaves more for me......Our turkeys around home aren't very enthusiastic about a load of #4"s at 1200 fps coming their way......Kill your dumb ones and maybee you'll have some smart ones left....

Calling em through the swamp, it's a whole nother thing down here!
A much different hunt than fields and hills. Shooting between palmettos and over Cypress knees, with a cheering squad of mosquitos, helping you out....
Ain't it fun!

Ketchn,
If your turkeys r too dumb for your likes you could always hunt them with a marble and a slingshot or a pea shooter.....
I feel like I have earned most Missouri birds I've killed....
If you can call them up in a parking lot here in Ms you could make some pretty good money doing seminars here teaching it. Never heard of anyone even attempting to say they could do that here.

turkey used to be my thing back when , there are lots of ways to trick them into range for sure . don't know much about the other subspecies but to be sure some of the Big Toms here are a bit more wary than others.
one of the main things I do here to keep it real is keep moving , real hens don't sit still long when they are looking to mate , run and gun is what they call it here .
I do know some play hide and seek better than others for sure and by no means am saying every situation in a turkey hunt is easy . I have belly crawled a long way thru spines and stickers a many a times to seal a deal .
they are for sure fun to play with without a doubt.

Down here the Osceola has a nasty habit of lock jaw, sometimes. 1 gobble off the roost then nothing. They usually stick their head around the corner and stare at you when you decide to eat a PBJ Saminch!
