Default Warning not for the weak

I shot this doe last night during bow season here in Indiana. I have seen and killed several deer over the years, and have never seen anything like this before. I contacted the DNR and was informed that I had still had to use a deer tag on it even though it looked like this. I contacted a state biologist this morning and sent him the same pictures. He stated that the meat should have still been good and that the infection was probably contained to the head. I saw this same deer about a month ago crossing the road near my hunting area. What are some of your thoughts. Name: 2015 deer.jpg

Although is may have been safe to eat I think I would have disposed of it also.

that looks like an abscess. i bet if you were to cut that open you would have some sore of foreign body but they can also form from a wound. if the deer looked healthy otherwise the meat was probably ok. thats still a bad infection.

I think you did her a favor! I wouldn't have eaten it either.

I say abscess as well. Could have even been an infected tooth.

One way to look at the license is to think that you may have done a favor to this deer.
Look at it this way, the DNR says that Bovine tuberculosis is also safe to consume yet they euthanize entire herds of cattle infected with it. I think you did the right thing in both regards. Potentially putting this animal out of it's misery and disposing of it without consuming it.

You did good putting this poor deer out of it's misery. I would never eat it neither as it would have fever and possibly a disease. Bad that they said you would have to waste your tag on a deer that needed to be put down. Be safe and good luck on your future hunts.

When I was 11 years old back in 1980, I killed my very first deer, a small 6 point. I was super proud of that buck and my older cousin strapped it across the hood of his old Jeep and we drove all around town with that thing tied on there. Afterwards, we got him hung up under the huge walnut tree at my grandparents house and found that someone had already shot that deer days or maybe weeks before. Got the skin off him and nothing on one shoulder except smelly nasty infection. Hauled him off for the buzzards to consume. I guess I didn't notice it because I was young and inexperienced, but my uncle said he saw that deer limping earlier that very morning and passed on him because he wasn't a big buck. I should have noticed, but I'm sure that I did that poor animal a favor. He had to be hurting with every step.

Your doe had to be in pain with that on her face. You helped the old girl out. GTT
