Seems like I read a article once about this....Never seen the wound open, but did see the large bulge before. Seems like the biologist said it could be from getting food (corn) wedged in jaw and starting the infection.

that looks nasty alright! if you dont know what it is its better safe than sorry. id agree with others about something in there. i wouldnt trust the DNR to tell you the truth either. i shot a doe that had been hit by a car one time. the hind had a patch of gangrene from the wound. i called a family friend and life long butcher about it. he told me to stay well away from the area and the rest was good to go. i trusted him and he was rite, it was just fine. never got a bit sick from it. i tested plenty before sharing it with the family though. lol

    you did good frank.

You would think that as much money that we spend as sportsman in this state and the past problems with deer. That the state would assist the hunters. I contacted a friend that is a co. He informed that there was no way around it. I asked if a biologest should look at it and was informed that it was a sunday and would be hard to get ahold of one, i called the bioligest on monday and was still informed no way around tagging it. Oh well whats money. Lol. Thanks for the replys guys. Back to archery hunting and crappie fishing.

I think I read the same article. Many times animals, especially deer get food that gets stuck in the gum line or between teeth and create this.

Wise choice not to eat it. Why risk it?
If we did what was most important in life there would be a shortage of Bibles.................and fishing poles
