Default What kind of feeders/ feed do you use?

I have 2 On-Time feeders spinning corn twice a day AND I have a 50 gallon barrel of corn & rice bran that I scoop out of and dump little piles on the ground before I climb up in my stand.

My On-Time feeders have been letting me down. They are both inconsistent and MAY or MAY NOT go off on time or maybe not at all. I'm getting tired of this inconsistency and have contacted On-Time about this and am waiting for an email reply.

The deer seem to head for the corn/ rice bran piles first anyway. Thinking about not running feeders at all next year and just going with the piles dumped by hand.

Was curious about what you guys did to attract the deer and how does what you're doing work? Thanks for replies. GTT

My experience is that On time feeders have become cheap junk. I wish had a different view of them since they are just down the road from here.

Sweeny feeders are hard to beat. More expensive but they are dependable and last YEARS without a problem. I did pick up a couple Moultrie feeders this year for $90 each. We put them in an area that is prone to flooding so in case we didn't get them out in time we wouldn't be out a whole lot. So far they've worked well. As far as feed.... SOYBEANS

Moultrie feeder on bottom of 55 gal drum with corn only. Hand toss corn/horse & mule feed mix around front yard and Moultrie feeder. Like the 6 times a day option
on the Moultrie. Feed only 3 times daily for 10 seconds total only. Always clean around feeder when I check my SD card daily. Battery life (6 volt) last a year in my
    Moultrie.

I use straight corn. Sometimes apples. Peanut butter will bring them in asap. When putting out corn I spread it in a large area like you're feeding chickens. They don't congregate and eat it as quickly this way and have to hunt for it a little more. I've used the barrel feeders that are just gravity fed and they work for me. No battery or timer.

I heard back from On-Time and they have no suggestions. They sent their prices for their Tomahawk feeders, but offered nothing as far as trade ins. I'm a little bit disappointed, but the ones I have DO have a lifetime warranty. I may just keep getting new guts put in them every year.

Oh, and Wademaster: You are the second person to mention peanut butter in the past week. I may just try that too. Thanks. GTT

I built a covered trough feeder. I don't shoot deer around my feeder but it does attract them and I like to watch them. For spreaders, I have 2 Moultrie feeders. 6 gallon type. One of those is 15 years old. Never had any trouble with them. I only use the Moultries to move around for hogs.

I don't feed the deer, they eat enough out of my garden.
I buy a 50 lb bag of table salt and 50 lb bag of sugar. Mix 5 lbs of each and pour over and around an old stump. After a couple of rains the mix is soaked in.

Is this pretty productive? Do they dig the ground up around the stump? How long does the 10lb mixture work before needing refreshing?

Wademaster, I'll get a pic of a stump that I just put salt on and post it. You can't believe what a deer will do to a stump!! I don't know if it is productive for shooting deer, but it does give them a salt lick. I never thought of adding sugar, but I imagine that would bring in hogs big time. I may start a new stump with some sugar on it.

I've seen what they can do. That's why I haven't put any out in/around my yard. Haha I have however wondered about this bucket on a rope thing that Walmart has. It's filled with some type of sticky stuff and you tie it on a limb or something. Anybody used that?
