Default 12 gauge 2 3/4" versus 3" for small game?

I have been out of hunting for a few years and recently purchased a shotgun capable of shooting up to 3 1/2". In the past I used 2 3/4 #7 1/2 for doves and #6 for squirrels. I am considering 3" for squirrels this year. What do you use?

    A Remington 870, nothing fancy.

How about a 1963 Light 12 Browning, round knob grip, 21" barrel, cylinder bore made in Belgium? I'm an old bird hunter and use 3 1/4-1 1/4 # 9 shot..

My first purchase when I was discharged from the USN..I think you know about the pistols.

I don't hunt squirrels anymore ... but, when I did it was mostly with a .22cal rifle & scope. The few times I actually used a shotgun, I used the same loads that I use for rabbits ... 2 3/4" #6 shot. For doves, which I still do hunt ... 2 3/4" #7.5 shot.

I'm shooting a 12ga magnum double barrel (full/imprvd) 3" chamber / 28" barrels ... Noble Mfg of Massachusetts (Made in Spain).

I would only consider using 3" shells, or even Express shells, if hunting for ducks/geese/turkey or larger game.

I like my ruger 10/22 also, but have a spot close to the city that is shotgun only. Plus these little wild suckers are getting hard to stalk.
