Saturday is the day my friend. I'll be out there at 10 am when the range opens. I'm taking my .30-06 Rem 700, my .25-06 Tikka Lite, and my .50 TC Omega muzzleloader. I'm gonna shoot em all and I'll post pics of the groups.

I was just thinking about you. Hope you see some improvement. Just remember you are not there yet. That Tikka is a nice rifle also. Hope you dont have to shoot on a public range. That sucks! Keep me posted.

    Default Caution - Nudity

Okay folks, today was the day. I was gonna go yesterday, but crappy weather prevented. We went to a Haloween dress up party, but despite the world class hangover I had this morning, I headed to the range. I brought my Remington 700 .30-06 that we have been talking about all along, my .25-06 Tikka T3 Lite, and my Thompson Center .50 cal muzzleloader.

I was shooting to zero my .30-06 at 100 yards, my .25-06 at 150 yards, and Omega at 100. The pictures below are of the pictures of the groups they were printing when I left.

Picture 1 - This is a cold barrel 2 shot group from the .30-06 at 100 yards using cheap 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt factory loads. I made a couple clicks up and shot 2 more times...see picture 2

Picture 2 - 2 shot group right on the horizontal line, but too much to the right for my liking. So I made a couple clicks to the left and shot 2 more times. They ended up way too far left, so I'm gonna have to go back right a couple clicks. I didn't have time to readjust because of sunlight. So I'm gonna cut out of work early one day this week and get it shooting perfect with my fancy high-dollar Winchester Supreme Elite ammo.

Picture 3 - This is a cold barrel 3 shot group from my .25-06 Tikka T3 Lite using 100 grain Remington Core-Lokt factory loads at 100 yards. The couple of flyers you see at the top of the target are from expensive-ass Federal Premium Vital Shok Nosler Ballistic tips. They sprayed all over the target, so I switched over to the cheap Core-Loks and they put up consistent tight patterns like the final one pictured. I'm gonna clean the gun and give the Federals another chance, but if they're as terrible on the patterns as the were today, I'm gonna be slinging Core-Loks this year. The pattern looks high, but remember this is a 150 yard zero. So 1.5 inch high at 100 yards is perfect for a .2506 trajectory.

By the way, that little .2506 is an absolute firebreather. It has always blown my mind why more people don't shoot them. People always buy a .243 or a .270 or 7mm. Why not try a .25-06??? Shoots faster and flatter than just about anything out there and will flat-out kill anything at in the eastern US.

I didn't put up any pictures of the Omega patterns, cause...uh...well...I'll just say the Omega's not quite there just yet...

I mentioned earlier that I went to the Halloween party last night. Well, I got up way too early this morning and had a ferocious hangover from last night's sins. You can look all over the internet and find plenty of cures and remedies for hangovers, but you will not find shooting a .50 cal muzzleloader loaded with 150 grains of powder among them. My hangover stayed with me all day and I nearly puked right there on the shooting table a couple times it rattled me so bad. I sure do like shooting it though. I don't know what it is, but I absolutely love shooting heavy reciol guns. Something about it just thrills me. So after shooting a box of 20 .30-06 rounds and about 20 shots with the Omega, I got this nice bruise as a souvenier and I thought yall would get a "kick" out of it. :D

I'm gonna be back out there this week. Prolly Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the weather and I'll post follow up shots.

Thanks again for all your help foul hook, skeetbum, slipbobber and Jusfshn.

One group doesnt make a rifle . It takes 5 consecutive shots to make a group. Forget about the cold and hot barrel. When the rifle is set up correctly it will put all 5 in a very tight group. Bench rest shooters dont get to warm up a barrel B4 they shoot. Those old boys are shooting less than 1/4 in. They are in the tenths. If you can set your bench up so that your upper body is in the vertical position, you will eliminate the bruise and most of the felt recoil. Use sandbags. Hangover no excuse !

    Here is something to think about. felt recoil: 25/06=12.5 # - 270=17 # - 30/06=20#-300UM=32#--375H&H=36# 458Win Mag=62#--470 Nitro=69#--50 BMG=70#--460 WEatherby mag=99.6#.

Agreed. I didn't say it was one group. I said it was the the groups the rifles were printing when I left, which was the final group after a good while of shooting. And I do pay attention to cold and hot barrel. I am a hunter and not a bench shooter, so I'm always dealing with a cold barrel. Therefore, I allow at least 3 to 5 minutes between shots while on the range cause I want to see what it's gonna do in a hunting scenario.

I'm going out there again tomorrow afternoon. My 2506 is driving tacks with the Core Lokt ammo, but I want to give the Federal Premiums another try. Also my 3006 is still shooting a little to the left and low. So I gotta get that straightened out cause I want it riding the vertical line about an inch high at 100 yards. I'll get some more pictures up the groups tomorrow.

Hey, where'd you find the poundage on the reciol? That's interesting.

WTG Black Crow, whats not to love about the 25-06 certainly one of the best ever! If you ever think about reloading it is a round that can be improved on greatly compared to factory stuff. Nothing beats practice time spent on the rifle range, keep shootin' and good luck!

Went back out there for about a half hour before sun down and worked on getting the .30-06 where it needs to be. The .25-06 is perfect where it is, so I didn't fool with it anymore. So anyway, I shot a couple times with my cheap Rem Core-Lokts to get the group a little higher up on the paper from where it was when I left it the other day. Then swithced to my Winchester Supreme Elites for the finishing touches.

Here are the final groups using the Supremes.

3 shot group was still hitting a little left, so I adjusted and shot 5 more times.

These may not be the match grade, olympic, long range bench shooter groups you are used to seeing, but they are just fine for me.

And by the way, that large hole to the upper left of the target is from my wild ass muzzleloader. That's another story for another day.
