    Question Plastic or Feather???

Here is a question that I am interested in seeing the responses from. This is mainly a "Longliners" question...... I know people that tie their own jigs to fish with, I know some that only buy jigs that are tied..(I call them Hair Jigs). Then there are the people that use a lead head with a plastic body, like Southern Pro, AWD or whatever. From my experience, I like the lead head with the plastic body because I can change colors in just a few seconds. I personally fish with Lightwire Hooks and I fish with all different plastic baits. The cost of the "Hair Jigs", from what I have seen is anywhere between $7.00-$12.00 per dozen. (So far Ragfly has the only one on the market that I have seen with Lightwire Hooks.) That averages out to be $9.50 per dozen or about 79 cents a piece. I usually buy plastics for $6.00-$8.00 per hundred which averages out to $7.00 per hundred (7 cents a piece) and lightwire hooks for $2.50 for a bag of 10 (25 cents a piece.). So I have an average of 32 cents invested in 1 bait that is a savings of about 60% over the Hair Jig. On the average of $9.50 per dozen on the Hair Jig and $3.84 per dozen on the jig head and plastic, is the Hair Jig really that much more of a better bait for the money....I am not trying to sell or promote one or the other, I just want to know what everyone else thinks. I have some Hair Jigs in box tackle box and I do catch fish on them. Convince me that the Hair Jig out fishes the plastics and I'll be glad to swap over and try them...Looking forward to reading any responses.

I was a plastic man until I started using gnats (from Donald@CrappieLogic he's on the MS board) and now I don't think I will use plastic much again. When I switched to them (me personally) I catch twice as many as I did with plastic--but again that is just me. They cost more of course then the .07 a piece but to me it is well worth it. you can get 30 for 24 bucks or 60 for 45 bucks. They last a long time (don't tear like plastic) and they come in a plano box as well. I use them on double minnow rigs and fish them jigging, rigging, drifting, you name it and one thing I have noticed is that when I get a hit--it's hooked. Since I have been using these i have not been hit that I didn't get the fish (other than one 3lber--but that's another story). I really didn't ever think I would use anything other than plastic until I started using these. They are fan great. Good luck to you.

Hair in the Fall only, anything else any other time. Hair beats everything else hands down in the Fall everywhere.

Since we are talking longline trolling. I will vote plastic for pulling faster than .7 mph. If pulling slow and deep, I am usually tipping with minnows and prefer Jiffy Jigs. But, if I could only pick one, pulling plastics would be it for variety and cost.

Those are sweet. And they will be getting used over here for sure. Donnie makes a quality bait and the color combos are only limited to your imagination.

I'm primary a plastic guy, but there are times that hair will out produce plastic and that's why I have both and use both. Lake Oconee taught me to use hair longlining, those guys will skunk you down there if you don't have the right baits.

Had a great time making hair jigs and used them for a while, but now I'm back to plastic. When they're hitting here in the fall I don't think it much matters. You can change color and style plastics in a matter of seconds and no re-tying like hair jigs...after all that BS I vote for plastics! :Hands Clapping Thanks for an interesting post.

I always pull some of each and let the fish decide. There are days that one way out fishes the other! Glad I have both to increase my odds. If the fish show a preference, I'll change to all plastic or all hair.

Triple Ripple plastic has always been the best period. I have hair and every other thing God has sent us. I even have the micro hair jigs. They all have a purpose and all will catch fish but if I had to use just one it would be the triple Ripple in bubblegum(pink).

Remember Hal Flies, they still work.

Give me plastic w/ a lightwire jig head please anytime. like has been said you can change colors in just a second and be right back at it, but most times I have several different colors in the water.
