    Default Clarks Hill report 14-17Apr

Happy Easter to everyone! Well the fishing continues to be somewhat slow for me. Probably because i have refuse to fish the banks like i normally do this time of the year, would just rather troll. Friday we fished Bighart, caught about 8 over 1.5lbs the rest throwbacks, Saturday not as good. Sunday went to Church had a great time. Monday fished Soap creek caught a bunch of throwbacks and no keepers, went to Long cane found some good fish but the wind was real high, only caught about 10 over 1lb. All the fish on Monday came on wildcat southern pro hot grub.

Yeah i here you manta1, but this has been my best year ever for big fish. Even if i didnt break lasts year best of 2lb 11oz Im not giving up trolling yet, i know the post spawn pattern pretty good and im keeping it a secret (deep) oops! But i wont start for a while, some good fish are still shallow.

Just started trying to spider rig and would like any pointers anyone would like to dispense: I have made my rod holders and have a capacity of four rods on each side of the bow. I have two 14', two 12', two 10', and two 8' rods with eyes and small spinning reels. I have been splitting these with one size of each on each side and using jigs in 1/8 and 1/32nd ounce sizes. Is this what you should do? While I have had some luck I feel that there is much to learn yet.
I have read about some people using minnows and am wondering is this a good way to go? Or perhaps a combination? Also what about depth? I have caught some in shallow water with the jigs actually bumping bottom (my fault slow reaction time) Is it possible to enter a tournament being a novice S.R.? The only place I have tried this style of fishing is in Long Cane Creek and don't know if this is an effective way to go in either Russell or Clark Hill. Also any thoughts on what month to start fishing for Crappie?

Sounds to me like you got a good start already. My rod set-up is very simular and all are fished off the bow. Some people use bobbers spider rigging and some don't. I'm a bobber man myself. I use a slip bobber. You can fish any depth with em. I use a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig head on all my rods. You can attach a jig, jig with minnow or just a minnow hooked through the lips.
I use just minnows 90% of the time and call it "Lip Fishing" :D I never troll / drift more than 1 to 1.5 mph.
Use your depthfinder, if you have one, to locate bait and fish. I've had great success when you find "bait balls" with fish suspended just under them. Feeding fish. Fish at a depth just above the depth the fish are located.
Fall, late winter through June is when I do most of my spider rigging. I've found that when the spawn is on, spider rigging is not as productive. After it gets hot, I fish at night under lights. I've been skunked more times than I care to remember and at all times of the year.
Long Cane and Little River is some of the best crappie water you'll find anywhere. My home waters.
Hope this helps and good fishing to ya!
    Oh, welcome aboard!
