Default Problem with 50 hp 2 stroke Merc.

I was out at sinclair today for the first time in several months. My boat cranked up fine, but when I went to accelerate I pushed the throttle down all the way and it ran for about 2 minutes then the motor shut off. After that I could not run the boat more than half throttle or the motor would shut off. After fishing for awhile, it took me an hour to get the motor cranked back up, and once it cranked I could only go barely above idle. I noticed alot of oil/gas coming from around the prop. What could be the problem and how much of a repair bill am I looking at? Thanks.

My 2 stroke E-TeK did about the same thing except for oil Gas from around the prop. My problem was an Injector but was covered by warrenty.

    Default Try Seafoam

Before you have the engine worked on try runing it with Seafoam in the tank. It really does a good job cleaning the fuel system.

you could have a fouled plug . run on muff and hold your finger on head around cylinders and feel if one is hotter than the other . the cold one would be the one not firing. or pull the plug wires off one at a time when you pull the good one the other will be the one not firing for some reason. run seafoam as directed put in new plugs . some motors has the serfase gap and they will foul easy .
retired and now i will always fish

My guess would be a fouled plug or a bad coil. The oil and gas you saw could be the result of one cylinder not firing and pumping the unburned gas and oil out the exhaust. Easiest way to check would be to put water muff on motor and with the motor running start pulling one plug wire at a time until you find the dead cylinder. If you don't find a dead cylinder then you may have other problems like timing or carburation.

Had the same problem last year on my 50 hp merc. Was a fouled plug. I switched to surface gap plugs and have not had problem scince.

Sounds like you left gas in carbs this winter .Carbs gelled up no doubt about it. High speed jet stopped up and cant take the gas . Have carbs cleaned and you'll be fine.

Seafoam (double dose) and new plugs. If that dont work, then off to the doctor... Usually it's $65 for the diagnostic fee and if you let them do the repair, they may waive the fee...
