    Default New Computer Ordered

I finally got tired of my desktop computer acting up. It has been giving me problems for almost a year now. It is so slow just trying to load the internet and I was getting a bunch of error messages. I actually saved a lot of things to my jump drive to avoid loosing anything because of fear of crashing (which happened 5 years ago resulting in me buying a new computer). Anyway, I turned on the TV the other morning and was flipping thru the channels when I came across HSN. They had Gateway laptops with 17 inch screens and a ton of software for only $799. I thought it was a good deal so I ordered one. I hope I made a good decision. Should have it by June 6th.

Please be sure and scan any files for viruses from your old computer before putting them on your new laptop. I would be willing to bet that your old computer has a virus of some sort. But then again if it is 5 years old it was time for an upgrade anyway.
    Birddog,

The newer tech will really speed things up when using cable/dsl. Also, may want to use some of the flash drives to hold pictures and things like that to avoid using up memory on your hard drive. I had an old desk top and was still running W2000. Switched to a Compaq F700 w/Windows Vista and it is lightning fast now with the same low grade cable high speed that I was using on the old desktop. I have several of the flash drives to use as back up and to store other big files. You can use cds but they can get scratched up. Just a thought. You should really enjoy the newer machine.

I probably won't transfer anything to the new computer from the old. I had this same concern of tranferring a virus. There really isn't much on the old computer that I can't replace without any difficulty.
I'm just happy to be getting a computer that will be faster. With the old computer it would usually take a good 15 minutes or more from the point of turning it on to being able to get on the internet.

Just received my new computer (laptop) and am in the process of setting it up. Gotta get used to this Vista system, but I think I will like it. Just need to buy a docking station so I can hook up a regular mouse. I am also going to buy a wireless router so I can sit in any room in the house and get on the internet.

If anyone has any advice on this operating system I am open for suggestion.

    Jim,

You're going to have fun. Vista has gotten a bad rap, but I've used all the systems and I like it as much as XP, which had been my favorite. Stable platform rarely crashes to the point of having to do a reboot. But it's still always smart to get a good virus scanner (Avast is free for home use!) and always transfer your one-of-a-kind items (like fishin' pics!) onto the flash or jump drive.
