Welcome from Missouri.
Hey from upper SC.
I suggest you drive to Columbia to register your boat. I bought my little boat from Dicks sporting goods in Pineville NC and they did not fill out the paperwork correctly. I drove to Columbia, could not register it. Drove back to Dicks, got my papers straightened out, drove back to Columbia and got it registered, all in the same day. I'm sure it would have been weeks or more if I was trying to register by mail. A pain to drive about 325 miles total to register a boat? YES Worth it to get on the water now? YES! SCDNR is just as picky as the DMV, probably a bit more even.

Matt,
Welcome to SC. Lake Murray is my home lake. It is a little tough for crappie but they are in there. Striper fishing is good too.
Here is the DNR website South Carolina Department of Natural Resources You can get the forms here to register it. Once you get the paperwork filled out, since you are close to Columbia I would also suggest you drive down to the DNR office to register your boat. Here in SC they register your boat and your motor, not the trailer. I bought a boat in NC and I had to take a picture of the serial number of the motor along with the form to get it registered. I think the instructions tell you to do that.
As Tophat said, they require a lot of info, but I have found them to be extremely helpful in answering your questions. Their office is on Assembly Street about 2 blocks behind the state capitol building.
Visit the SC forum and meet the guys from here.

Welcome from Louisiana and thank you for your service.
It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings.

Matt,
Forgot to mention that we have an active chapter of Trout unlimited here in Columbia. They hold fly tying seminars and are a good source of info about fly fishing here. The tailwaters below the Murray dam support a trout fishery and these guys can teach you a lot about that. Welcome to Saluda River Chapter Trout Unlimited
I fly fish, but only for panfish and bass in farm ponds.
