let me add this here fish story about the Russian river in Alaska , we would target the red run aka sockeye salmon , we carried real heavy weight fly tackle , them fish are WAY past brutal to play with in case you didn't know .
it is called combat fishing up there for a reason ....
sometimes we would hit the rainbows in there due to the abundance and possibly real large fish that might be lurking in that little shallow thing. so we are just standing on the bank on a bear trail and chatting it up about the next hole upstream a ways , the water is no more than 24 inches deep in that spot and as we are chatting he dangles an egg imitation right at our feet in the water ....
AN ABSOLUTELY MONSTER rainbow shot out from under the bank and HAMMERED his egg imitation fly and about dislocated his arm on the EXIT stage right ! He still had his 20 lb tippet still on from salmon chasing downstream and his drag set tight and that fish NEVER even slowed down a half second !
That fish snapped that 20 lb tippet like a 2 lb one and NEVER looked back .....
to this day some almost 20 years later it is stuck in my mind , the last thing that we saw was it's tail and to be very sure of this it was bigger than any rainbow tail I ever seen in my life .....just WOW what a giant rainbow ....
