I fly fish a lot in Utah, even for crappie. Trout are catch release, crappie for dinner.
I'm avid user of 7-8 WF floating line weight and 5 lb 9 ft leaders. I use mostly streamer flies and small jigs with or without a strike indicator, another term for fly fishing bobber. And, chances are of hooking a carp, striper, catfish, or bass is very possible. Heavier rod/ line handles all things possible.
You shouldn't spend a lot of money on gear. Practice in open yard areas, with light wright on end of leader.
Roll cast is essential in covered areas. Wading, float tubes help get to open water.
1/32 and smaller jigs, super glued 1.5" soft body.
Sometimes no bobber slow sinking jig hit right depth and floating line will pull forward on strike.

Welcome! There are a couple of folks here who FF. I also fish for trout, but here in my end of Kentucky the only trout are in the ponds the Commonwealth stocks, so those get to come home with me for lunch. I also fish for crappie with a fly rod, but my favorite fish on a fly rod is bluegill. As yours my most used fly is a wooly bugger or wooly worm. Dark colors seem to work best for me and a bit smaller than you - I use 12s to 16s. But for smallies I use a rootbeer color and as big as a #2. Hopped along a rocky bottom about this time of year works well. For BG & crappie I use a 3 wt and move to a 5 or 6 wt for small mouth.

I’m moving to Utah in the next couple of months from SoCal. Fly fishing opportunities were limited and took a good drive from my house and I’m looking forward to having lakes within a short drive to me. Lots of new varieties for me white bass smallmouth and walleyes to name a few. Do you tube? Fish from shore or from a boat? Do you fish Utah lake?
I have individual pontoon, wade, fish from bank. Have to find the crappie and depends on what I'm capable to doing.
Willard bay has crappie, wipers, catfish, walleye, bass and some bluegill.
I go between fly rod and 10 ft jig pole. 5-6 lb test.
You never know crappie fishing willard what happens. I caught 3-4lb wiper on 6lb, 12 ft rod i used last year, talk about gaggles.

I live by the Weber River, that's pronounced We-ber, as in berrrr, not Web-ber, as in charcoal grills. lol. I'm a transplant to Utah, so have made numerous announciation errors of Utah linguistics.
Trout aren't my fish of choice to eat, so catch , pic maybe, release.
