    Default Fly Leader?

I have a question about the fly leaders. Like I mentioned in another thread I mostly bream fish. I use a small cork a tiny split shot and a #8 hook with a cricket on it. My question is can I just put all this stuff onto my leader or do I need a tippet also?

First question: are you casting or just using the rod like a jig pole?

    More later.

If you're using a tapered leader, it's a good idea to have spare tippet on hand. As you tie on hooks/flies, you will eat into your leader. By adding tippet, you will extend the life of the leader. If you're using just a straight piece of mono, though, I wouldn't worry about tippet.

It will cast better without a split shot. If you need the shot, though, several smaller shot will cast better than one big one.

If you cast with any weight, a Belgian cast (oval cast) will help, also:

You should try some artificial flies, too. They work great.

the split shots I use are no bigger than a #8 shotgun pellet is just enough to get the cricket to sink if not they will stay on top and I want them down. I have been using a fly rod for a few years now but I always used an eyelet and tied a tippet straight to it.

    That'll work, too.

Seriously, though, try some "bead head" nymphs. Any of the standard trout nymphs will work. Here's an example:

Thanks death I was just trying to figure out what would be best I know the combo I am about to buy comes with a 9ft 4x leader and to me that is difficult to roll because of the long leader.

I normally run a 6ft tippet on the eyelet and it has always worked out great.
