My figure 8 comment should have been "with a longer leader than what the lure mfr recommends". In my case, 7-9' vs 4-6 per the directions on the Betts variety pack packaging.

I tried making the casts with more of a side arm or angled away from vertical position, and that helped to give some spacing, but still, that hook/lure whizzing by is different than using regular spinning gear. I wear glasses anyways, and did have a hat on, but thinking about a full face motorcycle helmet (happen to have a couple in the closet)

Are the words "leader" and "tippet" interchangeable? I stated leader in my questions, and your last response you used the word tippet.

    Again, thanks for the help.

I meant to behave, but there were just way too many other options available at the time.

OK, I understand a little better. Yeah, in that case, you'll get more of a figure 8 with a longer leader.

Yeah, it's different, but you'll get used to it.

"Leader" is the entire piece of mono between the fly line and the fly. "Tippet" is the very tip section that gets tied to the fly.

very nice work yellowjacket, very nice indeed.

    DB4D;
    again, thanks.
So leader and tippet are somewhat interchangable, but tippet really refers to the end as you stated. Off to utube I go.

    a nutter dumb ?

Is it necessary to leave air dry the fly line after a trip to the water?

Not with modern lines. You had to air dry the old silk lines, but that's ancient history.

I very seldom use a tippet . Mainly use stren 6 or 8 lb. Test ( i crappie fish 90% of the time ) which will serve the purpose . I also use a 8 .5 glass 6/7 wt rod . One suggestion . Try a few sinking black ant or gnats as well . These ms. Bream love them .GET YOU SOME FLY CLEARNER TO USE AFTER/BEFOR EACH TRIP . JMO .

    thanks DB4D,

    Eagle1,
I've read, maybe here or elsewhere, where mono line is a replacement for the leader, does it affect the casting in anyway since the mono is not tapered?

eagle 1 makes a good point. If you're using a sinking fly, a straight piece of mono works really well. Since it's all the same diameter it sinks better. I prefer to use flourocarbon for this because it sinks better than mono. I do this mostly with very small jigs or "bead head" flies. The weight of the fly/jig will turn over the leader.

If you're throwing a big wind-resistant fly like a popper, though, I'd rather have a tapered leader.

    a nutter ? then:

IF you're changing tactics, say going from a popper which stays on the surface, to wanting to get down a little bit with say a jig (and what size jig would that be ???) would you just remove the tapered leader (cut the nail knot off) and tie on some mono or floro to the same fly line, or do you "mastercasters" have another rod & reel already set up/rigged for this tactic??

Starting to sound like some $$ if another rod/reel is the popular answer, but fly line ain't cheap either compared to mono when you start clipping them knots out.

Or would you have another reel with line rigged this way and just change reels/line and go from there?
