I only use tapered leader for trout fishing. I changed over to the 4-5' of sinking tip on 2' of flourocarbon line (supposedly invisible in the water) the knot I was talking about was hooking the clouser to the flouro. I'm hoping tying with a loop allows the clouser to move through the water more naturally than tied tightly to the line. I'm looking at the fact I never caught anything on the king of crappie flies (clouser) and looking for remedies as to what i'm doing wrong. I have seen trout men on the river tie tight little loops on dry flies to get more natural drift. Some of these guys tie loops so small they're barley perceptible. Seems like you're doing ok the way you are....maybe I ought to go somewhere where there's some fish :-)

Here's a pic I already had uploaded of a size 6 bead chain Clouser minnow like I tie em. Mustad 3407DT, bead chain, calftail. Nothing too crazy!

Now that's something new to me. The clousers I bought off the internet had the eye bent up towards the hook. I was under the assumption thats what made them move snaggless with the hook facing up. I saw yours are straight. I went to Clousers website and his are straight like yours. Maybe that why I haven't caught anything they might be moving some way that scares the fish. Thanks for the photo, learn something new everyday. I get the old pliers out and make some adjustments to 20 I have. You never know what your buying when you don't know what your buying. Thanks

Another pattern that might be worth trying is a Slumpbuster. I whacked some crappie and whites again last night on a sz 8 orange one. It's a good 1-2 punch with the bead chain Clousers. Lighter and light/bright in color, and heavy and dark. That's my 2 cents...

I found a picture of the slumpbuster after a search and it looks alot like the Zonkers I use. Now I HAVE caught a lot of crappie on this fly and use it regularly.

I contacted my clouser supplier and he told me the dfference between the bent down hook tip and the straight tip was one was for salt water, the other for for fresh......Bob clouser uses the same hook for both so I don't know what thats all about. I'm heading out now to try to use the straightened eyes on a loose loop.......
this is an important post to guys like me that have questions on what they're buying, thanks for starting it.
