anyone?
hello all, i have been fishing for crappie since i was a kid, but always with minnows, i have tried casting before with a jig under a bobber but with VERY little success, i read and hear of fisherman using jigs in brushpiles and such and i am really tired of depending on minnows 100%. i'm gonna give it a try 2morrow at river junction, there is a lot of cypress trees in the water and grass and stick for cover, my question is do i just tie the jig on with a small split shot and lower it slowly into the bushes or cover? i will be fishing from the bank with a 12ft crappie pole, the problem is i'm a little intimidated cos of all the hang-ups and spending more time tieing on jigs than fishing, i do fish the outside of the cypress trees and cover with minnows with some success but i'm sure if i could get a handle on fishing jigs in cover and stumps my success rate would be better. any tips on fishing jigs in the stick and cover would be appreciated or even some reading material would be appreciated. never had the pleasure of fishing with someone who primarily fishes jigs to learn a thing or two. i'm really tired of depending on minnows when i know there is so much more i can do to improve my crappie fishing. thanks in advance and take care.
Stand-by Dudly, patience ! !
I'm just like you !
Several years ago, a friend (old Pro=according to him) turned me on to Crappie fishin.
When the cool, fall weather arrived, we'd switch from saltwater (Reds) fishin to crappie fishin. And we'd go out in the middle of the lake, use minnows/w/bobbers. We'd drift/troll and did fair. Eventually the bite fell off and we had one hole up in the river we'd generally find somemore. But we never used jigs and never fished up near the bank, always out in the middle of the lake/river.
Me and my friend sorta got away from fishin so much together (still friends) and eventually, I met a fellow that didn't have a boat but was a big addict on crappie fishin, so we started fishin some. I find this fellow uses "ONLY" jigs. Well, me bein almost a pro by now , was interested in seein just who's stuff was the better. We did fairly same same the first few trips, him usin jigs, me minnows.
Then the day came when he blew me away, lock stock and barrel, AND, started doin it EVERY TIME we went out.
So, I started comin around a little, got to tryin minnow tipped jigs, that worked good, but he still outdid me and he was fishin while I'm puttin minnows on !
End of story = Yesterday I did the unthinkable ! I passed right by the bait store not stoppin, I was going to cut the cord and go "Jig's Only", see my last post (Return to paradise). we got 27 (+) a nice Bass, all on jigs.
I guess I been somewhat "Converted". I always said I'd NEVER go without my minnows, but there I did and nothin bad happened.
What have I learned =
Pre spawn = they gather out in the lake = Troll/drift
Spawn = They head for the shallow waters to build their nest and mate (right up to the edges of the bank), = jig em
Post spawn = Ain't got there yet, but, think they head back out in the lake.
After post spawn = They all go to Georgia so them folks can fish their spawn
Have a nice day,
Danny
(Jig only, no splitshot, yeah, lots of hang ups, bring many jigs, you'll get better))

dudley, the good thing about this time of yearis that if you dont have a boat, you can wade fish for these spawning crappie. knee deep to waist deep water should produce . 4-5ft of line on jig pole, and fish stumps, grass, trash, logs, cane, pencilweed, cat tails, lillypads, until you find them. respect the local gator, and attach a small inner tube to a eagle claw fish basket so you have a place for your fish. if that fails, let 309 know, and he may take you for a small fee of 350,000 dollars. hope this helps. welcome to the forum. tjj
Naw, Naw, Naw!!!
It's $350.00, "NOT" $350,000.00, I wish you'd wear your glasses more ! ! !
