Question Blue Cypress Lake, Vero Beach, Florida

    Hello all,

Long time lurker here. Enjoying the site lots. My son and I want to fish Blue Cypress Lake for crappie this coming weekend. Now we've fished the lake quite a few times for bass and have caught the occasional crappie but we never targeted them until now.

To that end, can some of you more experienced anglers just point me in a general direction as to artificial baits and what to look for as far as targeting different types of structure, etc.

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome from a little further north of you. I don’t know that particular lake but I can possibly give you some baits that may work for you as well as they work for me. I long line troll about 1 mph and use 2” curl tails with a dark body and a chartreuse tail. White body and chartreuse tail is another as is electric chicken. Roadrunners also work well and also catch bass and Gar and other fish too. Same baits also work well casting along with the slabalicious in the colors stated. Popsicle is another to add to the spread. Hope y’all find some, and please watch the wind. Been stiff here lately.

Well as you already know, Blue Cypress is one of the most picturesque lakes you will find.
And the 5 mile drive back to the lake from rt 60 more often than not will allow for seeing deer and especially turkeys, ( if your looking for them ). The other day i saw a flock of 10 nice gobblers for example.
Although it is one of the closer lakes to where i live, i havent fished there in quite awhile.
The other day I talked to a man from Kentucky who had been bass fishing.
He was very dissapointed, and very surprised that no other boats were there.
The lake itself runs way back into the trees pretty much all around.
Especially now with the high water.
And if you want to catch crappies, thats where you need to be as well.
But you need to be set up with the right boat for doing that.
I wouldnt be wasting my time trolling the lake itself.
I would turn south upon leaving the ramp area, stay close to shore, and then get back into any place you see along the way.
There are a few places that you can get pretty far back in, even with larger boats.
Fish the weeds and trees, and even dig some holes to drop your jig in.
The longer rods will be better than the casting types, the telescopics will work just fine.
Almost directly opposite the ramp on the other side is mud fish creek.
You can get back in there maybe a mile or so before it closes up.
Its actually the headwaters of the Saint Johns which spills under Rt 60.
You might do pretty well back in there fishing the weeds.
Be aware that the lake can get pretty rough.
Which is one of the reasons i avoid it, as my boat dosent do rough water very well.
On the north end is the M canal which parralels Stickmarsh. Also called the Saint Johns on some maps.
About 1/4 mile in from the lake on your right is the Zig Zag canal, which also parralels Stickmarsh/Farm13.
Again, you will do better on crappies if you fish those canals.
If you want minnows, stop in Fellsmere for them, because you wont get them at Blue Cypress.
Its actually closer when heading south on 95 to exit at Fellsmere anyway, then take 512 to rt 60.
You will pass right by Garcia by doing that, about 1 mile before rt 60.
