Having spoken of fishing several times with a friend from the clay target club we both belong to, yesterday was the day to get it done. Nino has fished most of his life but mostly salt water and had never trolled fresh water like we do. We bumped into Slimjim at the ramp and made some plans for the area and time frame and headed out. The winds were out of the northwest and predicted at 10, but you know how they lie. I hoped for a few hours to have some fun before they got too strong and was blessed with just that. The ride out was a bit chilly but the clear skies let the sun take the edge off soon enough. Got to the area of the day and set out my 6 rods and we didn’t have long to wait. It never got hot and heavy but we did double up once or twice. Never went more than a few hundred yards before turning around and going back to what had worked to get a couple more. One of our fish looked real good in coming to the net and tipped the scale at a pound and seven ounces, the big fish of the day. Total was about 17 fish with 8 in the box and the rest needed a little bit more time to grow.we did get one good Shad comfortably over 16” that did all the tarpon tricks, jumping and running into other lines. He could have been crab trap bait but today he got a pass. What fun and a good fight. Nino spent the day learning new techniques and asking questions and generally being excited about this new way of doing things. I believe he’ll be joining us out there again soon in his own rig. I enjoyed the day passing on little tips and watching him reel in most of the fish. A day I’ll remember with a smile. At the ramp, Slimjim showed us his PB and we put a scale to it, an impressive fish that my guest couldn’t get over. A chunky fish in every way. Good Job Jim!! Ramps are now opening and I’ll get back into the river next trip and see what I’ve been missing and what the high water changed. Hope y’all get out soon, not much more I can say but they’re bitin!
