I'm thinking about fishing Orange Lake for the first time. Can someone tell me the preferred/safest boat ramps to launch from? I'm coming from the Wildwood, FL area, thanks
Two launches
Heagy-Burry- This one is in Orange Lake, FL, right off of 441. From the South you go North past 318, and start looking on your right for a Sunoco convenience store. There will be a brown sign. Ramp is at the end of the road. The location is nice but the ramp is extremely steep. Then you run through hydrilla for about ten minutes to reach the main part of the lake. Cop lives there.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park- This one is in Cross Creek, Fl. This ramp is not steep and is very nice. Once launched you motor out through some shallow water, then make a left hand turn, then a right, and you will be in the main lake pretty quickly. Lots of parking.
The water levels are up right now and the spawn should be pretty much over with. Lake depths are average 8 feet with a slightly deeper spot in the middle. Hydrilla is everywhere and the FWC was chopping at the stuff during the Winter. Lake is six or seven miles from North to South and about two miles across. Stained water. This lake gets most of it’s flow from Newnans Lake in Gainesville, through the River Styx. From there it sends it’s water through Cross Creek into Lochloosa Lake.
Lochloosa Lake can be accessed from 301, where there is another good ramp. Good luck.
Maybe they will bite this one……
