Default Made a run on the river

It all started with a question and then a phone call. The question was when are they going to run ? my answer was when the bait shad are in the river. Well, the phone call was from another friend who said that he had seen the bait shad in the river in good numbers. That ment that it was time to go!

I gave Les a call ( the one that asked the question ) and we met at the river at 6:30 am. Time enough to catch some bait and head down to our fishing spot.

Well so much for plans. could not find the shad !! But I had a back up plan just in case. We tried a different spot and bingo, shad ! I filled the bait well and we started to run to our spot. But by this time the sun was well up in the sky. It was later then I like to set up for these fish. But we got set up on the first spot. and waited. and waited. The sun climbed higher in the sky. Still nothing!

We move to our second spot. I was fishing with only one rod out, but Les was using two rods. one of his rods got tangled and I put my rod into the rod holder to go help him. I looked back at my rod and it had moved in the rod holder. I picked up the rod and told Les , Fish on ! He said that I must have hooked the bottom. I reeled in some and said Nope, fish on. That is when the fish decided to start playing with us and made a hard run. Les jumped up and cleared his rods and grabbed the net. The fish made 4 or 5 hard runs and Les thought that I hooked a big cat. But then it broke surface close to the boat and Les was able to get a look at it. Striper !

I took 3 tries to net it but it came on board. We reset all the rods and I added a second rod . Next it was Les's turn to have a rod bend. And bend it did. A few seconds later it was dancing on it's tail. After a little bit of work a nice 19" large mouth comes on board. A few pictures and it goes back to give someone else a thrill.

My rod goes off again. This time it was a big old cat. I let it go at the side of the boat. Time to move. New spot not any better, move again. and again.

We didn't catch what we were hoping to catch but it was a great morning out on the water with a good friend, and we had our rods bend some. To me that makes for a good day.

My striper (sunshine bass) came in at 19" and was a fatty. This is my personal best so far. Still looking for a 20 incher.

    Until next time ,

wishing you all full nets and tight lines.

    see you on the water.

    Jim

another good day at the office !
