Good job out there today. Brings back memories of my Grandpa catching fish when they wintered in Ft Pierce. He loved founder and brought them home to KY in the spring. Thanks for sharing.
It’s just bragging rights, but it’s something to shoot for when you go. Other than the good groceries. A Snook, Redfish and a Seatrout make the inshore slam. Add a Tarpon or a Flounder and it becomes a Grand Slam. Add them both and it’s a Super Slam or Royal slam. Never having caught a Tarpon, that’s a future pursuit. Today started out with high anticipation and overcast skies. What I noticed different today from days past was a breeze that had a bit of cool in it that lasted most of the morning. Temps were in the 70’s and it was a pleasant change. If the skeeters had left me alone as the sun rose it would have been much better, but they come with the territory. The wind out of the west had my starting place a bit wind blown but I still managed a couple of trout on topwater before picking up a jig. The first redfish was another first, never gotten one this small before. As in our crappie population, I like seeing these. Let’s me know there’s a future for our fish.
A flounder about 17” liked the jig and quickly went on ice while everything except flounder got a pass today. Made a move and worked a sandy shoreline, the sun now bright and more overhead. I saw a shadow move and pitched a jig on the rod in hand past it and the shadow moved. The thump and splash and say goodbye to 40 yards of line, quickly. I couldn’t get turned around and keep the line clear of the boat without putting the rod high overhead. Doing that must’ve given enough slack that, yet again, a large snook said goodbye. One day I’ll put the pieces together and get my hands one one for the pics and release. As the morning got towards noon, the bite improved. Got another flounder, this one my PB at 21 1/2” that also went on ice and gave up some fillets thicker than my thumb is wide.
I began looking for more fish cruising the mangrove line and finally got the snook I was looking for. Good fight with lots of air time and a very pretty fish.
The sun was high and it was hot and this old man had enough of the heat, but here came another school cruising, and I couldn’t say no. Glad I did.
I had a really good day with a few firsts thrown in. Now if I can just find a tarpon before they get hard to find in the cooler temps. Thanks for taking the ride with me today. It’s one I’ll remember for a long time. Here’s a couple more pics of some of my visitors. Looking forward to seeing everyone come November 6, I’ll probably be back in the sweetwater by then. Hope to see you out some day soon, til then……Skeet.

Thanks everyone. A longer than normal day for me and I feel it this morning. Vic, I like the Snook also but don’t get much of it. All the big ones have been hooked on the lightest rod in the boat and say goodbye before we get to meet. I’m leaving that rod home next time. It’s hard to do when it casts like no other I own. Maybe next week……..
